How to Pick Out a Ball Mount for a 1-1/4 inch Hitch
Question:
I have a 2009 subaru forester. I bought it used and it has a tow hitch already installed. I need a ball mount and i am unsure what to buy. It is a 3/4 inch receiver tube opening so it requires a 1-1/4 inch mount. My question is 2 part: what class hitch do i have and what is the correct set that i need to tow anything? Are 1-1/4inch to 3inch adaptors safe? Or do i just need a straight up 1-1/4inch ball mount? Is tongue weight a concern with an adaptor? Thanks

It's hard to say for certain what hitch you have on your 2009 Subaru Forester, but it looks just like the Curt Class II hitch part # C12047 which happens to be a Class II hitch.
You would want to stick with a Class II 1-1/4 inch ball mount as using an adapter will cut the capacity of the hitch in half.
In order to determine what ball mount you would need you will want to check out the help article I attached that details how to pick out a ball mount so that your trailer is towed as level as possible. Once you know how much rise/drop you would need check out the other link I attached that has all of the ball mounts we offer that would fit.
