Providing a Maintenance Charge to Trailer Mounted Battery from a 2014 Nissan Pathfinder

My trailer battery does not charge when hooked to the car. It charges when plugged in to shore power. I have a 7 pin. Tow vehicle is a 2014 Pathfinder towing a 2011 rockwood A122 pop up campler

Helpful Expert Reply:
The 12 volt circuit on a 7-Way trailer connector can only provide a maintenance charge to a trailer mounted battery. It cannot charge it up. To provide a maintenance charge you would run the 12 volt wire from the trailer connector to the positive battery terminal on the trailer.
To avoid back feeding when the trailer is connected to shore power you can either disconnect the trailer from your Pathfinder or you can install a diode, # RM-690, in line with the 12 volt circuit wire from the trailer connector to the battery. The diode will act as a gate allowing power to only flow in one direction, avoiding back feeding.
