Can Fulton Coupler Hinge Kits Fold Up Instead of to the Side

Question:

I am looking to utilize this coupler for my trailer which currently has a 3inch W x2inch H steel tongue. Assuming the male casting is welded/bolted to the trailer frame as recommended can this coupler be mounted so the extension would flip UP versus to the SIDE? Unfortunately because of the orientation of the tube in my trailer frame it appears I would have to I mount it this way. The trailer is less than 2600lbs gross and 260lbs tongue weight and will be extended about 30. Thanks!

I might have a solution for you, but the Fulton Fold-Away Coupler Hinge Kit, # FHDPB230101, was designed to be mounted to where the tongue will fold to the side. Mounting the hinge kit to where the tongue would fold up provides no lateral stability and should not be used in this way.

It sounds like your trailer frame is 3 inches wide and 2 inches tall. What you could use instead would be the 3 inch by 3 inch hinge kit part # FHDPB330301 and then use a spacer on your trailer frame so that it would fit the hinge. You would need to use a 1 inch spacer and have it welded to the frame by a qualified welder.
