Best Fifth Wheel Hitch Setup Recommendation for a 2014 Ram 2500 with Short Bed

Question:

HI, I have a 2014 RAM 2500 with the short bed. I am looking for a 5th wheel rail kit to install. I see some people putting a slider hitch. Is it needed or just nice to have? I believe my truck is 6FT or 6FT 4 inches so I dont think I need it.

When you tow a fifth wheel trailer with a truck that has a bed length that is less than 8 feet you need to use a slider hitch so that when it comes time to make a tight turn you can slide the hitch back and give you enough clearance to execute the turn without interference from the trailer and cab.

Or, you might be interested in a Sidewinder pin box. A Sidewinder moves the pivot point back 22 inches so that when you go around corners you don't have to get out and slide the hitch back. It's a MUCH nicer setup than using a slider.

You will need to remove the pin box of the trailer and replace it with a Sidewinder pin box. Sidewinders are pin box specific so you will first need to know what pin box you have now in order to pick out the correct one.

There should be a sticker or a stamping on the OEM pin box of the trailer that will list the pin box number that is on the trailer.

Once you figure out which pin box you have you can check the FAQ I attached that has a chart that shows the correct Sidewinder to get based on which pin box you have.

Then for a stationary hitch the Reese part # RP30918 would fit right into the hitch prep package you have on your 2014 Ram and you would be good to.
