Availability and Installation of Trailer Hitch for 2015 Honda CR-V

Question:

Hi - I have a 2015 Honda CRV and I am interested in installing a hitch. Is it possible to install any of the models and only make a small cut out in bottom panel vs a larger 4x8 inch rectangle? I would prefer to only cut out enough of the panel so that hitch support arm slides through. I understand that I will need to move the panel back into place after the hitch is bolted to the frame. Is there enough clearance in having the panel hang down while bolting to achieve this? I would like to have a cleaner look to the bottom panel when complete. Thanks for any advice. Also - which hitch do you recommend for this install?

Your 2015 Honda CR-V can be fitted with any of three classes of hitch receiver, either Class I or Class II in the 1-1/4-inch size, or a Class III type that has a 2-inch receiver opening. I recommend you use a 2-inch Class III hitch like Draw-Tite # 75742 because this will provide higher capacity if you're going to tow, better safety margin and broader compatibility with a range of hitch-mount accessories like bike racks and cargo carriers.

We happened to have installed this hitch in your same vehicle and the linked video will show you the entire process and also show you the finished result. I also included two helpful articles with good tips for an easier hitch install. Draw-Tite # 75742 installs using included hardware and no drilling is required.

The underbody panel will be removed for easier hitch installation and this will require you to cut an opening for the hitch mounting flange if you wish to re-install it (or you can leave it off altogether). You really will not gain anything by making that opening smaller and this will likely make the installation more difficult. The exhaust must be temporarily lowered to provide clearance for installation.

If you plan to tow you'll need a wiring harness # 118561, a ball mount # 2753, a pin and clip # PC3 (or a lock # 63232) and a hitch ball of the correct size for your trailer's coupler. For a 1-7/8-inch size use # 19260 or for a 2-inch use # 63845.

It is always a good idea to check your owner's manual to confirm the vehicle's capacities before doing any towing.
