The Tekonsha Voyager Trailer Brake Controller # 39510 is designed for use only with electric trailer brakes. It will not operate properly with an electric-over-hydraulic (EOH) trailer braking system. An example of a controller that can be used with both electric and EOH brakes is the Prodigy P2 # 90885 which has a switch that let's you select between the two types of brakes.
The process for wiring a brake controller in your 2012 GMC Sierra 3500 is outlined in the linked article. You will need to locate a bundle of wires under the steering column tied together with white tape, located to the left of the brake pedal. This bundle of wires is the tow package for the brake controller. Here is how you will connect the vehicle wires to the 4 wires on the brake controller:
RED vehicle wire connects to BLACK controller wire (this is 12V power input).
DARK BLUE vehicle wire connects to BLUE brake controller wire (this is breaking output).
LIGHT BLUE or ORANGE vehicle wire connects to RED wire on controller (brake input signal).
WHITE vehicle wire connects to WHITE controller wire (ground).
The two remaining connections will be made under the hood at the power distribution box as shown in the photos in the article. You will make two connections to two posts, one for power to the brake controller and one for trailer power at the 7-way. Please refer to the photos in the article to help you locate these connections points.
If you do not have one, I suggest you get a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to help you confirm proper signals at the 7-way and in case you need to do any troubleshooting of the controller installation.
