Parts Needed to Install a 7-Way on a 2005 Dodge Ram with 4-Way
Question:
How can I tell if I have the factory tow package? Ive purchased a used 2005 RAM 1500 quad cab for RV towing. At first I thought I had the factory towing pkg, but now Im not sure. The vehicle has the factory 2inch receiver hitch, and there a place in the bumper for the 7 connector plug covered now with a plastic cover. Ive nosed behind the bumper and all I can see is a 4 pin flat trailer connection. Where would the connector be for the 7 pin plug, tucked up under the spare tire perhaps? Or because I have the 4 pin flat plug, does it mean I dont have the 7 pin harness? Thanks for your help.

The easiest way to determine if you have the factory tow package would be to contact at Dodge dealer with your VIN.
If you can find a square connector that looks like what the # HM42190 would plug into behind your rear bumper then this would work great to install a 7-way.
Otherwise you would need to use the adapter part # 37185. You would plug in your 4-way to this and the lighting functions of the 7-way would be active.
If you need the 7-way for a brake controller install you would instead want the part # ETBC7 as that comes with everything needed for a brake controller install.
For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.
