How to Pick Out a Trailer Winch for a 4,900 lb Boat Trailer

Question:

Hello, Thank you for the detailed info that does exist. I have a 2003 Robalo r235 about 4900 pounds dry. I am replacing the winch. It rolls easy and I can get the trailer pretty deep. So cranking doesnt concern me. What does concern me is the boat pulling back on a steep ramp. Does the capacity of the winch have an effect on the boat pulling back as you tow up the ramp? And of course Im going to ask which you recommend. Thank you!

Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks like what you currently have the ratio is 1 to 1.

Once you have a winch picked out for your setup it would be rated not only for winching the boat in, but also for keeping the boat attached to the trailer as you drive up the ramp.

Your boat weighs 4,900 lbs and the winch part # F142425 that you rated has a capacity of 3,200 lbs so it would be a great choice for you. I attached a review video for this winch for you to check out as well.
