Many vehicles like your 2003 Toyota Avalon are specified to use only a powered (or active) trailer lighting harness such as the four shown on the link provided, one of which is the Curt # C59236. The Hopkins harness # HM11141820 that you referenced also requires a 12V power connection to the vehicle battery, but note this harness is not a fit for your 2003 Avalon.
The reason that only powered harnesses are offered for your car is that the wiring in the vehicle is not heavy enough to handle the power drawn by your trailer lights. By using a powered converter the actual power to illuminate your trailer lights comes not through the car's wiring but through that 12V power feed wire; the car's wiring simply delivers the signals to tell the converter what to do.
This provides protection to your car's delicate wiring from an overload or short circuit on the trailer. This is VERY cheap insurance to protect your car's wiring.
We offer both helpful installation videos and articles to assist your install; links to both are provided for you.
