Recommended Brake Controller And Wiring For 2000 Ford F-150

Question:

I am interested in a trailer brake controller. How can I tell if my 2000 Ford F150 is prewired under the dash? I purchased it used with no manuals. I would like to install a Tekonsha Voyager. Thanks,

You will have the port under the dash to plug in the adapter for a brake controller on your 2000 Ford F-150.

I recommend the Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160. This controller features a digital readout that will alert you to any problem with the braking system rather than a single LED that changes colors. The plug-in adapter for the Primus you need is part # 3035-P. One end simply plugs into the back of the controller and the other end plugs into the port located under the dash. I have attached a link to an installation video for a brake controller on a 2000 F-150 you can check out.

If you have a 4-way connector at the back of your F-150 but no 7-way, you will need part # ETBC7. This will connect to your 4-way connector and gives you a 7-way and 4-way connector for your trailer.

If you have no 4-way connector at the back of your F-150, you will need part # C56031. This is an easy installation and does not require cutting or splicing into the existing wiring. The location points are located behind the rear bumper.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.

I have attached links to some helpful articles that you can take a look at.
