Recommended Weight Distribution System Towing a Large Travel Trailer
Question:
Im hauling a large travel trailer. I have an Equalizer brand hitch. It performs very well except for the noise. It sounds like gun fire when I make slow turns. I love guns but I dont like the noise from my hitch disturbing other people at the campground. Will the Reese Straightline hitch RP66083, RP66073 or RP66087 give me the same performance without the noise? Also, whats the difference between a trunnion bar and a round bar? Thanks!

I highly recommend choosing the trunnion bar system over round bar because trunnion bars slide into the weight distribution head instead of inserting into it from the bottom. Also, trunnion bars will provide more ground clearance.
Out of the 3 systems # RP66083, # RP66073 and # RP66087 you referenced, I recommend the Reese system with sway control trunnion bar # RP66083 because an adjustable shank is included. The maximum rise is 6-1/2 inches and maximum drop is 1-1/4 inches from the top of the hitch receiver opening.
If you need a new hitch ball, the Curt 2-inch hitch ball # A-90 (10,000 pound weight capacity) or Tow Ready 2-5/16 inch hitch ball # 19286 (12,000 pound weight capacity) will both have a 1-1/4 inch diameter and will work just fine.
Yes, your system will be more quiet with a straight line system and having active sway control is the best option. The dual-cam sway control automatically self-adjusts and self-centers in a variety of situations. Your Equalizer system shouldn't make that loud pop (like a shotgun) as you stated, and taking a look at your spring bars at the head and bracket to check for any loose or damaged points. See the diagram I included.
I included a informative article and video review for you too.
