Is a Sidewinder Pin Box or Slider Hitch Needed for a 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 with 5-1/2 Foot Bed
Question:
I have a 5th wheel slider hitch but need to install the rails, what kit do I need and will the slider work for the short bed, or should I use the side winder.

It sounds like your 2006 GMC Sierra 1500 has the very short 5-1/2 foot bed. If this is the case then a slider hitch with not be able to travel far enough to give you the clearance needed to make tight turns. And it would not be able to slide back without the tailgate removed. So a Sidewinder would be needed.
First, for an installation kit, I recommend custom kit # RP50064-58. This kit does not require drilling into the truck frame and installs in less time than a universal kit.
You could still use a slider as long as it is not cushioned but you have to leave it locked in the tow position at all times. Let me know the specific model hitch you have so I can make sure it is compatible with a Sidewinder.
Sidewinders only fit certain 5th wheel trailer pin boxes. I would need to know the manufacturer and model of the pin box to determine fit. This information should be on a sticker or plate on the pin box itself. I have included a link to our help article on Sidewinders for you as well.
