Safety Chains that can Accommodate 3/8" Bolt
Question:
re: safety tow chains I have a class one trailer coupler. The tongue on my trailer doe not have welded on brackets of any kind to fasten the safety chains to. So for now I would need to purchase a safety chain that will be just big enough to allow a 3/8inch bolt to pass through it. I expect it will be of sufficient capacity for my application if it has sufficient space in the chain link to allow the 3/8inch bolt to pass through it. So either I need a small loop as in one link of chain to allow a 3/8inch bolt to go through or I need to purchase a chain or chains that has sufficient space in the link to allow a 3/8inch bolt to pass through it. The bolt will be a grade 5 or 8 bolt.

The chain links on safety chain # 1483-535-04 are 3/8 of an inch in diameter. This chain has a 5,400 lbs. Working Load Limit. For a quick link use # 6590-044-04. Its working load limit is 2,200 pounds. Since the safety chain is rated higher using a 3/8 inch quick link will reduce the capacity.
