How to Pull Apart Tail Light Wiring Connectors to Install Trailer Wiring Harness on 2000 Toyota RAV4

Question:

I have a basic 2000 Toyota Rav4. I have removed the side panels and have located the connector to the taillights but I cannot get electrical connector apart to install the T-connector for the trailer. Can you please tell me how to separate the electrical connector apart so I can complete the installation or is there a video available showing how to do this? Thank you.

An easy way to learn and practice how to get the factory tail light connectors apart on your 2000 Toyota RAV4 is to push together and pull apart two compatible ends of the wiring harness # C55486. this is because they have the same locking mechanism as found on the vehicle. Basically, there is a little tab on the side of one of the connectors that locks around a nub on the mating connector. Usually a small flat head screwdriver is all you need to pry up the tab (gently) and pull the connectors apart.
