Is this the result of the installation of something, such as a brake controller? On a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 a brake controller has to be hardwired in. Three of the four connections are straight-forward. But one could cause some problems if not attached to the correct wire.
The 3 easier ones are white for ground, black for 12 volt power in, and blue for output to trailer brakes. The white ground wire must be attached to the negative battery terminal. No other location is substantial enough. Black connects to the positive battery terminal via a 30 amp circuit breaker such as # 38630. And of course blue connects to the 7-Way trailer connector.
The red wire though needs to connect to the cold side of the brake switch. Make sure it is attached to the brake switch wire that only has power when the brake pedal is pressed. If the wire shows power at any other time, such as with the head lights or turn signals on, it is not the correct wire. When we hardwired in a brake controller on a 2001 Ram the correct brake switch wire was white with a tan stripe. I linked the video showing installation for you.
If this is not the issue then you will want to take the truck to a trusted mechanic or Dodge dealer technician to diagnose the problem.
