The PT Cruiser started in the 2001 model year. They were not being produced in 1998. I used to have a 2003 model myself. The good thing about the PT Cruiser is that the body style pretty much stayed the same its entire lifespan. I have used Thule trunk mount bike racks on my 2003 model and they are a fit and work well.

The Thule Passage 3 # TH911XT does fit both the first and second generation PT Cruisers. So in other words, the entire run of that vehicle.

I can offer some fit tips since I have plenty of experience installing trunk mount racks on a PT Cruiser. You will find that it is easier to get the top hooks in place by starting them at the corners (top left and top right) where there is more space. And the bottom hooks can be put in place by either starting them at the sides and working them down or but slightly opening the rear hatch to get them in place.

If you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wife's bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my son's bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
