Recommended Trailer Hitch For 2015 BMW X5 And How To Prevent Corrosion
Question:
I am looking at 2015 BMW X5 hitch options. I plan to rarely tow, but want a 6000 lb hitch. My biggest complaint has been how every hitch I buy rusts terribly in only a few years salty roads of New England. Of my two choices: Draw-tite Curt is different looking Which has the best paint process? They always seem to flake off shortly after installation, even if never towed. Thanks.

We do have trailer hitches that are designed to work with your 2015 BMW X5.
The Draw-Tite, part # 75600 is a confirmed fit for your vehicle. The Curt hitch, part # 13077 has a different design but has the same towing capacities as the # 75600. A note from Curt states that All non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps like part # 18050. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from CURT.
All of the hitches are powder-coated steel which is a great rust resistant paint. As you said though, years in an environment with a lot of salt will take its toll and over time will show signs of rust as you described. You could use a car wax to slow the rust process down, and touch up any areas with paint to help keep the hitch looking nice on your X5.
The hitch I recommend is the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver, part # 75600. This is a Class lll hitch and it has a 2 inch receiver opening. You will want to check your owner's manual or with your dealership to make sure you do not exceed the vehicle tongue or towing weight capacity. I have attached a link to an installation video for this hitch on a 2011 X5 you can check out.
Since you are planning on towing you might be interested in etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes a 1-7/8 inch ball, 2 inch ball, hitch pin with clip, and a storage bag.
If you do not have trailer wiring on your X5 I recommend the Curt Powered Tail Light Converter Kit with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56190KIT.
I have attached links to product pages for some of the hitch mounted accessories we offer you can take a look at. If you have a specific item in mind just let me know and I can make some recommendations that work for you.
