Recommendations To Be Able To Carry 2 Kayaks On Hyundai Accent

Question:

I would like to car top two kayaks, which together exceed the weight capacity for both my roof and Yakima racks. I was wondering if I could use DTA944, in conjunction with a hitch conversion, to take half the weight from roof and racks.

All of the hitches we offer for a Hyundai Accent are Class l hitches.

The Erickson Big Bed Junior Load Extender for Truck Bed or Roof - 2" Hitches - 350 lbs, Item # EM07605 is designed to fit a 2 inch receiver opening. If you use a hitch adapter to make the 1-1/4 inch receiver on your Accent able to accept 2 inch shanks it reduces the load carrying capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. I do not recommend using a system like this but may have an option that will work for you. Using this adapter would more than likely place the rear crossbar of the Darby unit either too low or too high when installed.

I recommend installing a hitch on your Accent and using a trailer like the Yakima Rack And Roll Trailer, part # Y08107. This trailer has a 250 lb weight capacity, so it would be able to handle your 2 kayaks easily. The trailer has a maximum crossbar spread of 48 inches.

The trailer does require a 2 inch hitch ball like part # 19258.

If you let me know the year of your Accent, I will be happy to make some recommendations for hitches that would fit your vehicle.
