Hitch Availability and Installation Difficulty for 2014 Toyota RAV4 LE Version
Question:
I have a 2014 RAV4 LE model and want to know if the RAV4 trailer hitch will fit on my car, and if I need to take to a mechanic to install or could a friend put it on? Sounds like the exhaust pipe may need lowering, is that difficult? Will I loose some clearance Thank you.

Your 2014 Toyota RAV4 LE can be equipped with either a 1-1/4-inch Class II or a heavier-duty 2-inch Class III hitch. All options can be seen on the link provided. I recommend a 2-inch Class III hitch like the Curt # C13149 for its higher capacity (and safety margin) and for its generally better compatibility with a broad range of hitch-mount accessories like bike and cargo carriers.
Hitch installation requires mostly basic mechanical skills and hand tools. The only specialized tool needed is a torque wrench, which is needed to ensure a hitch's fasteners are installed exactly as intended by the manufacturer. You may be able to rent or borrow a torque wrench from a local auto supply shop if you do not own one.
I cannot be certain of the exact figure, but my colleagues and I guesstimate that at least half of the folks who buy a hitch from us handle the install on their own. Our helpful articles and videos give you detailed step-by-step instructions. I have linked an install video showing this Curt hitch being installed on a 2013 RAV4. I also linked several articles with hitch installation tips. I suggest you review these to help you decide if you prefer to do the install yourself or have a professional do it for you.
Lowering an exhaust is NOT a difficult process. It essentially consists of removing a rubber-band-like hanger (with the aid of some spray lubricant) until the hitch is bolted into place. Naturally, a lift to raise the vehicle makes this a lot easier. I don't have one either!
The install video I have provided will give you clearance dimensions for the hitch once it is installed.
With a Class III hitch installed you can use a compatible Class III bike or cargo carrier or tow up to the weight limit indicated in your RAV4 owner's manual. Please feel free to let me know your intended purpose and I will be glad to offer recommendations.
