Troubleshooting Non-working Running Lights on a Trailer Being Pulled by a 2012 Suzuki Equator
Question:
2012 Suzuki equator 4wd. It has trailer oem trailer wiring and I plugged in the wiring harness from U-Haul but I do not have running lights. I have turn signals, emergency flashers and brake lights but no running lights. I have been using my emergency flashers as running lights to get by. What do I need to do and what will it cost to get my lights working correctly?

To determine if the issue is on the vehicle or the trailer you will need to disconnect the trailer and use a circuit tester such as # PTW2993 to test the vehicle side connector. With the running lights on, test the pins on the vehicle side connector. If there is no power at the connector, then the issue is on the truck. If there is power at the vehicle connector, then the issue is on the trailer.
You can check to see if the tow package fuses and relays are present or just bad by using your 2012 Suzuki Equator's owner's manual to find the fuse and relay locations.
If you don't have a tow package running light relay present inside the cab or under the hood of your 2012 Suzuki Equator, you will need a running light/turn signal relay. For this, you can use one of the blue relays from the Curt Relay Kit # C57000.
If the issues revert back to the trailer, you may have a ground issue. Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another function like a turn signal or brake light.
Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces.
The light grounds should also be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. If there is anything between a light ground and the metal trailer frame or if the trailer has an aluminum frame, tilt bed, or folding tongue, any of these things can interrupt the ground. Running jumper wires from the light grounds to the main trailer connector ground can help.
I included a few FAQ's and video installation for you too.
