Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier For Sprinter RV With Rear Mounted Spare Tire

Question:

We do offer some hitch-mounted carriers that may work for you on the back of your Sprinter RV. Using an extender in any hitch will reduce the weight carrying capacity of the hitch by 50 percent so we do not typically recommend using those. One carrier you might want to check out is the Pro Series Cargo Carrier, part # 63153. This carrier's outside dimension are 61-1/2 inches long x 25-1/2 inches wide x 5-1/2 inches tall. The distance from the center of the hitch pin to the closest edge of the carrier is 12-3/4 inches. I have attached a link to a product review for this carrier you can check out. You can take a quick measurement to see if a carrier will clear the rear mounted spare on your RV. You will need a tape measure and a straight edge like a yardstick or a dowel. Place the straight edge vertically against the back of the spare tire, letting it extend below the trailer hitch receiver opening. Then measure from the center of the hitch pin to the straight edge. This will give you the distance you need to clear the spare tire. If the measurement you take is less than 12-3/4 inches you will have enough clearance with the # 65153 carrier.

Thanks for the photo. It does help when researching and checking to see if there is a solution for your Sprinter. If you use an extender like part # MT70024, it would put the pin hole for a carrier about 12 inches further back. That would get you the needed distance you said you need to extend beyond the spare tire. But as I said in the earlier reply, installing a hitch extender will lower the hitch capacity by 50 percent. The weight of the carrier should be considered when you calculate how much your hitch can handle. You may want to take a look at the Curt Cargo Carrier, part # C18113. This is a 22-1/2 inch X 49 inch carrier and is made from aluminum. This carrier weighs about 25 lbs which is considerably less than the steel carriers. Again, you will need to know the hitch capacity and the weight capacity of the Sprinter and make sure you do not exceed either of those capacities.
