5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Install Kit for a 2013 Toyota Tundra with 5-1/2 Foot Bed

Question:

the manual for my Tundra does not recommendinch use of a 5th wheel hitch for my Tundra Mega Cap 55inch bed. is this because of the turning limitations and the back window or some instillation issue. Would a slider hitch resolve this issue and if so, what hitch would you recommend for a 8000 lb. 5th wheel that is advertised as 1/2 compatible.

First, pay close attention to the language used in the owner's manual of your 2013 Toyota Tundra. If it says it is not recommended, that is a lot different than saying do not use a 5th wheel hitch or tow a 5th wheel trailer.

The issue probably is the short bed and clearance issue. But a slider is not going to work because you need more clearance than a slider hitch can provide. On truck beds shorter than 6 feet long the best option is to use a stationary hitch and a Sidewinder replacement pin box on the trailer. A Sidewinder moves the pivot point of the trailer back 22 inches. A slider can at most travel 12 inches.

You need as much clearance as you can get so the truck does not make contact with the trailer when making tight turns. Before going any further you will need to determine if there is a Sidewinder that fits the trailer.

There should be a sticker or plate on the pin box itself that lists the manufacturer and model number. Then you can look at the chart at the bottom of the Sidewinder help article I have linked to determine if there is one that will fit.

If there is then you will need an installation kit and a hitch. For a custom installation kit you can use # RP50084-58. Custom installation kits require much less drilling so they install in less time compared to universal or semi-custom kits. For a semi-custom kit use # RP30035-309.

For a hitch I recommend the Reese 16K hitch # RP30047. It features a double pivot head and dual-jaw design. A very good entry level hitch. Be sure to also make sure the truck has a high enough capacity to tow the trailer when loaded and ready to tow.
