Recommended Brake Controller and Install Procedure for 2013 Chevy Suburban

Question:

I need a brake controller so I can tow a tandem axle enclosed cargo trailer with my 2013 Suburban. What controller would you recommend?

I'd recommend you use a proportional controller. A proportional controller features an integrated accelerometer so the controller can determine how quickly the tow vehicle is braking. It will then send the appropriate amount of voltage to the trailer brakes so that the trailer and tow vehicle stop at the same rate. This provides safer, more predictable braking, and can mean less wear and tear on the vehicle and trailer brakes because neither vehicle's having to do all the work.

I really like the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, part # 90885. The P2 is easy to install, easy to set up and easy to use.

The controller would install by wiring directly into the tow package wiring under the dash just left of the brake pedal. Look for a bundle that contains a red, dark blue, light blue or orange and a white wire. The bundle of wires will have a white tag on it, and the wiring would connect directly to the pigtail included with the brake controller as follows:

Red Tow Package Wire to Black Brake Controller Wire
Dark Blue Tow Package Wire to Blue Brake Controller Wire
Light Blue or Orange Tow Package Wire to Red Brake Controller Wire
White Tow Package Wire to White Brake Controller Wire

I've linked you to installation instructions and an install video showing a brake controller being installed on a 2011 Suburban. The procedure for your vehicle will be identical.
