Easy-to-Access Brake Controller

Tekonsha POD Controls and Components

The Tekonsha POD is designed to mount in any direction, and it's especially suited for mounting on near-vertical dashes. All the controls are on the front of the module, so you can still access them with the controller tucked away in a convenient place.

Tekonsha POD review

Braking Output

Braking output is the maximum amount of power that will be applied to your trailer's brakes. How much braking output you need is determined by the weight of your trailer; a heavier trailer will need more power to bring it to a stop. You want to set the braking output as high as you can without locking up the brakes. Once you've set up the brake controller the first time, you shouldn't need to adjust the settings until the trailer load changes, you switch trailers, or road conditions change. Use the thumbwheel on the side to change the braking output level. The output setting will appear as a number on the digital display, with a higher number indicating higher braking power.

Manual Override

The Tekonsha POD keeps the manual override within easy reach on the front of the module, great for stopping sway or controlling your trailer's momentum in emergencies. Push the slide-bar lever to activate the trailer's brakes and brake lights without you having to apply the brakes on your tow vehicle, perfect for limiting trailer movement while you re cruising.

Quick, Simple Installation

Because inertia plays no role in the functioning of this controller, you do not have to mount the unit at any particular angle. Your mounting options are limitless, with the controller designed with all of the controls on the front of the module so you can access them even if it's mounted upside down.

If your vehicle already has a plug-in brake controller wiring harness, just connect the unit to it. Otherwise, you will need to purchase a vehicle-specific wiring harness (sold separately) to plug into. If a harness is unavailable for your vehicle, hardwiring will be necessary.

Installation Accessories

See also etrailer.com's exclusive 7- and 4-way brake control installation kit (ETBC7 - sold separately) if you don't already have a 7-way plug at the back of your vehicle.

Note: If a custom brake control wiring adapter is not available for your vehicle, a 20-amp circuit breaker (sold separately) may be required for installation.

Time-Delayed Braking

What is time-delayed braking

The Tekonsha POD comes equipped with time-delayed braking. Every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle, a signal is sent - via the brake switch - to the POD. The controller then sends power out to your trailer brakes to activate them with an intensity set by you, at a rate determined by you. The amount of braking power (output) can be adjusted to suit your preference, the road conditions, the type of trailer, and the weight of your load. To determine which levels are best for your application, test your towing setup and choose what feels right.

Installation of Tekonsha Brake Controller Adapter

Brake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the built-in connector beneath your vehicle's dashboard. To access this connector, first locate the instrument cluster finish panel in the center of you dash, near the driver's side. Carefully pry the panel out and undo the locking tabs to remove the panel. Plug the adaptor into the mating connector in the large gray housing behind the panel.

To install your electric brake controller you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein these wires are run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. Often, a brake controller wiring harness is included with your tow package. This harness plugs into a port beneath your dash and connects to the four wires of the brake controller. If, however, you have a brake controller with a plug in place of the four loose wires, you can use the Tekonsha adapter.

This adapter requires no hardwiring. It is designed to plug directly into your electric brake controller for the simplest installation possible. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time and securely stow it away.

Great little brake controller for the money if you don't need heavy braking on a larger trailer. Simple and economic.

Install with pigtail for my F150 was easy. Unfortunately, when I hook up my trailer the controller does not recognize a trailer with electric brakes is attached. Very disappointed.

Wayne, I will help with troubleshooting the controller. To troubleshoot this you will first want to isolate the issue to the vehicle or to the trailer. I suggest hooking up to a second vehicle that has a brake controller and see if the same error code is present. If this is the case then the issue is with the trailer. If you do not see the see the error code then it is an issue with the vehicle. My first suggestion for troubleshooting this is to check the vehicle connection point and make sure that all the pin/blades are functional and there is no sign of damage or corrosion at the vehicle connection point and the wires leading to it. You will want to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to verify the functions of the pin/blades while that function is activated. You will also want to make sure that all the grounding wires are properly secured to an appropriate bare metal surface. This might also cause an open circuit display. The next step is to test the wires leading to and from the brake controller. You will need to use a circuit tester again and test the wires leading to and from the brake controller and make sure that it is receiving and sending the proper signals. You may need to increase the power output level for testing these functions. If you determine that the issue is related to the trailer then I suggest also inspecting the trailer connector for any signs of corrosion, damage or and loose wires. Next you will also want to inspect the magnets on the brakes of the trailer. You will want to make sure that the magnets are properly grounded, in good condition, and the wiring to them is functional. I have included links to several helpful articles for your reference.

We have a Honda Ridgeline and needed this for our camper trailer. It was nice ordering the specific plug in wire for the Ridgeline and therefore eliminating hard wiring, just plugged it in. It was rough getting to the factory plug under the dash by the emergency brake petal switch. My hands are not small enough, ha ha. But success was had. Plugged into the controller and mounted it and u-wall-a. It works the way it is suppose to, I like that. A good quality unit that does what it is suppose to. thanks.

by: Michael B.03/08/2019

Very happy with this product. It fit nicely in my truck and plugged right into the factory wiring harness. Total installation time was under an hour. Easy to adjust, and works perfectly with my 5th wheel trailer. I simply pulled out the little storage cubby from the dash, cut the back off, slid the controller in, bolted it together, and stuck it all back in the dash. Looks and works great.

This is my third truck using my prodigy brake controller with the plug in adapter. As in the past the wiring is heavy gauge to match vehicle & installed with ease. I used the prodigy mount bracket to take up space & slid it in factory controller slot. I can unplug it when not in use if I want & interior looks stock. I make a slot in back of dash compartment to feed adapter wire through for easy plug in & out. Product was revived quickly & ordering on etrailer site was a breeze. Would definitely recommend this plug & play adapter

Still working out great. Just to add to previous review I just wanted to add that another plus to the harness is that there is plenty of wire to reach factory plug.

by: Brian 06/20/2024

Pigtail fit as described. Pretty idiot proof. Hardest part was getting access to the plug and running the wires to the controller. Installed in a 2023 Jayco Greyhawk 29MV. It works as described.

Plugged right into my 2023 Ford E-350 RV. Mounted my Tekonsha by my right knee and have electric brakes now! No drama, no splicing, plenty of length.

Easy to install in my Toyota-Tacoma 2012. I pull my Travel Trailer and this break controller worked very well and with just a little bit adjustment. Also this item was shipped very fast.

by: Mike06/26/2013

I have a Toyota Tacoma (06). I had the controller installed in less than five minutes. One minute to gather the tools: drill/bits, screw driver, and tape. I thought tape would be helpful to hold the ground screw to the driver given the tight are under the dash. One minute to drill the ground hole. One minute to install the ground screw. One minute to plug in the cables and fish the wire under the stirring wheel to allow for the controller to be mounted in the storage area found on Tacoma trucks dash. I guess I was wrong. It only took four minutes. I did not need to put the tools away I was off to do other projects. I rate the product as good because I have not tried it on the trailer yet.

by: Bill G.06/04/2017

I received my purchase very quickly.
I
just installed the control and wire harness today. Installation was easy, all you need are basic hand tools and a drill with a small bit.
Haven't had chance to test it out yet but, when I do I'll update.

by: Tom05/21/2021

Worked out perfectly for me, super easy installation with adapter harness. Work's flawlessly, easy one hand gain control with control's on front. My truck had nice cubby it fit in so out of the way and seamless look. Thanks for a great product and service.

by: Eric07/09/2015

The adaptor seems to be well built. Works like it is supposed to.
Good price. Excellent customer service. Speedy processing.

I will definitely be purchasing future upgrades/products from etrailer.

Thank you for your good service and kind customer rep. Hard to find good experiences like this nowadays.
I've included a picture of a Tekonsha Voyager that I installed in the area the OEM TBC would be. Its sturdy. It works. Too easy.

Just got back from a 1,100 mile trip. The Voyager TBC worked perfectly and the cable I ordered from etrailer.com was a perfect fit and performance.

by: Douglas04/16/2024

Right now my rating is poor because the supplied pigtail for 2018 Ford F150 with tow package does not connect to my F150!
Supplied connector is a rectangle shape, the socket under the dash is a trapezoid and they do not connect together.

I will say though that Robert B is helping me out and I sure hope we can get this figured out quickly

by: Steve12/28/2018
2015 FordF-150

Worked great. Very easy to install.
I
cut a hole in the back of the dash cubby hole to the right of the steering wheel for the wires to pass through and used adhesive velcro to mount the brake controller in the cubby. The brake controller is held with velcro on the bottom and the sides and does not vibrate or move at all.
Very easy install and the only hole I drilled was in the back of the cubby hole and the brake controller is very easy to reach for braking and adjusting.
I wanted to slide the controller further back in the cubby, but the velcro started sticking early and I left it. It could probably slide back another 1/2" to 3/4". Not much, but would be nicer. I may pull it out in the future to get it seated further back, but the velcro is really strong so I don't want to mess with it right now.

Thanks to etrailer’s video “Trailer Brake Controller Installation - 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee”, the installation of a Tekonsha PowerTrac controller on my 2003 Jeep was very straight forward (and I’m not a car guy!). Like in the video, I used the wiring kit (#5506). I forgot to order a pigtail wiring harness but was able to pick one up locally. Took the trailer out last weekend and the brakes worked great.

I sell and install a variety of components for various companies and individuals. I have zero comebacks from this company. Not that I haven't received defective parts but they always make it right. And that is good business.

by: Caleb 02/07/2024

The controller was a great option for our 2021 forest river FSX and gave me plenty of control over the brakes. It does require a adjustment time to time but has always worked when brakes are applied. The setup and installation were a breeze and has worked for many trips.

2010 FordF-150

Easy install on my 2010 F 150 XLT. There are 2 possible locations for the trailer wiring harness if your vehicle did not come equipped with the mfg brake control. Consult owners manual. My harness was located below steering colum behind lower dash. I routed my harness to the left side behind the parking brake release lever. You may have to remove the outer sleeve of the factory harness depening on your vehicle. Mounted the mounting bracket with double sided foam tape and predrilled holes before screwing in place. Mounted the Pod brake control and tested. 5 stars!

by: Tim B.05/10/2013

The control works great. Nice incremental application of wheel from nothing to hard on! Led light goes from green to red also in incremental degrees. Installation was a snap in my 2008 F150 with tow package. Just Plug in the control clip and the other end in the terminal above and to the right of the computer check terminal. Rather than have it below my dash I opted for the cove below the lighter. Etrailer did a nice job of getting out to me right away and kept me informed where this was at all the way to my door. Good Job!

by: Larry Mcb.05/22/2022

Have used the power track for a year with city and interstate travel and a 4000# single axle TT. Working flawlessly on my 20 Blazer using a bypass stoplight switch.

by: DeWayne03/13/2022

Received wiring harness today. Just finished installing the P3 brake controller with the harness. All appears well. A bit tricky working the screws with the mounting brackets but all else went fairly smoothly removing the dash trim plate and plugging the harness in. Video showing how to install helped immensely. I added a relay fuse to slot 9 and a fuse to slot 21 in fuse box in engine compartment on top of radiator for the 2009 F150. They came with towing package for truck.

by: Patricia02/21/2024

The brake controller we purchased and had professionally installed works perfectly. We had it installed in our RV for use when towing a large vehicle trailer. It's reliable and simple. It was a great purchase!

by: Dan H10/12/2017

Product installed exactly as described and in the videos. The wiring harness plugged right into the plug under my steering wheel. When I got my order confirmation they sent me a few videos on how to install just Incase I had any questions. Product works great and is super easy to use and adjust for my trailer. Highly recommended.

Tow vehicle plug and wiring adapter mate, controller turns on. Ordered a hydrastar actuator that hopefully will arrive mid May. Can’t say more until order complete, installed, and used. I can say this business has excellent service. Not my first nor last order, thanks folks.

John

Works fine, it’s a plug at each end connected by wires and hidden under the dash. Guaranteed not to rust, bust, or collect dust.
