Required Clearance for Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution Systems

Technical Bulletin

SUBJECT / Summary: Required clearance for Reese Steadi-Flex weight distribution systemsPROBLEM: On some trailers, components of Reese Steadi-Flex heavy duty weight distribution systems could contact a trailer's frame if there is not enough clearance between the two. This potential clearance problem pertains to these part numbers: RP66559, RP66560, and RP66561. Only trailers that have top mount couplers could pose a problem; trailers that have 4" to 7" frame rails and bottom mount couplers should work without issue. The following diagram shows where contact could occur.

SOLUTION: You can measure the frame of a trailer to ensure that the Reese Steadi-Flex weight distribution system will clear the trailer's frame. The diagram below shows where to measure to ensure adequate clearance, and the table shows the distances needed. Keep the following points in mind when measuring:
  • The measurements given in the table are for straight and level installations
  • Chain loops, brackets, and accessories must be included in the coupler offset dimension
  • If a measurement is in between the measurements given in the table, ensure that there is at least 3/4" clearance between the ballmount and the trailer frame rail or accessories
    • If frame rail depth is over 5", then 3/4" clearance must be maintained when steering on flat ground
