Good value for the $. Exact fit and fast shipping. Stopping power a little bit lower than original Dexter Brakes

These brakes are a great value. It takes a while to break them in, but after that they offer the same stopping power as the OEM brakes.

Box was damaged in shipping. Brakes pads were shifted off the pivot stud. Realigned. Looks like they're ok. I won't know for sure until they're installed and operating. Still an excellent so far. Good price, and fast shipping.

Adjusted brakes about two months after installation and all are working good. Just make sure the magneto wire clamp is secured to the brake arm

I sent a question to etrailer.com Re: brake assemblies for my 1964 Airstream RV. I got a prompt response explaining how to measure the old brakes on the trailer to correctly size the brakes I needed. Finding the size allowed me to research the hub & bearing assemblies I also needed. I ordered them all with confidence they'd fit. Installed the self adjusting Electric Brake Assemblies along with the Hub kit with bearings, All parts fit together perfectly. Thanks George.

I’m very satisfied with the Brake and Hub Assy’s. I purchased from you guys. I recently had a question regarding Lug Nut Torque on the Hubs. I couldn’t locate any info on the instructions that came in the Boxes nor could I find this Info on the website. I looked in the FAQ’s area & also on the parts info page for the parts I bought. I like finding the Info myself, Usually after hours. I ended up having to call you guys. I talked to Sammie at Customer Service, She didn’t have the exact but did know where to get it. She sent me the Torque Chart with the Torque settings for the Hub and Wheel Type I have. I think that this Info Should be included in the box with the new Hubs and Lug Nuts, Plus easily found on the website. Your Videos and Tips are a Great Extra Plus for us DIY’s like me. I Appreciate Your effforts!! Thanks Again,

The brake assemblies look good. I have not yet received the hub/drum assemblies. the packaging for the brake assemblies is totally unacceptable. the cardboard box was two and one half times larger than appropriate and had one piece of paper stuffed in to hold the contents in place. when I lifted the box I was sickened to hear the product roll from one end of the box to the other. Luckily there was little damage except for paint. Hopefully the hub/drum assemblies are packaged better.

I would have to say that the self adjust drums were a nightmare! They actually wore completely out in less than 6 months with one assembly completely and literally exploding. They seemed to have been over adjusting themselves. They never really gave any real noticeable stopping power. I will never have another trailer with drum brakes. We had to have those brakes warrantied out and we upgraded to the disk brake conversion which is a night and day difference! We love the disk brakes that we received from etrailer!

I suspect that the brakes were not seated when they were installed which can cause the brakes to seem weak until they are worn in. This in turn may cause you to over brake with which wear out the brakes quicker. When installing new brakes, both manual and never adjust, you will want to drive the trailer out into an open area, like an empty parking lot. Get up to around 40 MPH and apply the manual override on your brake controller. Make sure the brake controller is set high enough where it will fully engage the trailer brakes. Do not hit the brake pedal during this time, as you want to slow down your vehicle and trailer with only the trailer brakes. You will most likely have to do this about 20 to 30 times to properly seat the brakes. When you feel like your brakes are properly seated, pull over and check for signs that youre done: a bit of smoke is normal and your brakes should be very hot. The brakes should read 350-400 degrees with a temperature gun If you do not see these signs then repeat until the brakes are properly seated.

These brake assemblies were an exact duplicate of the originals I was replacing. If you zoom on the pictures I took the two right side ratchet assemblies are knocked loose due to the shipping being dropped, no fault of the etrailer. The sturdy shipping box came in very handy for kneeling on while working on the brakes as you can see I’m working in the area with gravel all around the wheels. This is my second purchase from etrailer and both purchases have arrived quickly and worthy of their price.

It has taken one of the bothersome maintenance jobs from the check list I had to do to have my 5th wheel road ready.

by: Derek12/20/2023

They don’t seem to be self adjusting. I did an initial adjustment and have had them on for a year now and they don’t seem to grab very strong. I have these on a tandem axle flatbed and all four engage but I can’t get the tires to drag on gravel even with the settings all the way up. I just redid all the wiring on my trailer and ran new lines, all soldered, and still no improvement. It’s possible it has something to do with my tow vehicle (2500 Cummins) but I have it set to “heavy electric” and it’s not engaging. The old brakes I replaced actually worked better than these ones.

Based off the info you gave, it sounds to me like it might be a bedding issue. Before you start that process, though, you want to make sure that your brakes are adjusted loose enough that you can turn your wheels by hand but tight enough that they arent able to freely spin. Once that is done, take a look at step four of the attached article. It will walk you through the bedding process.

by: Michael M05/23/2024

Damaged in shipping. Like other reviews have stated, etrailer throws these heavy things loose in a cheap, thin box and sends it. Product arrived with box ripped open. Brakes loose, smacking into each other, which left chips in the brake pads. Come on etrailer - do better. There's no excuse for shipping like this.

by: Mike 05/30/2024

Etrailer sent me an email regarding a one year follow up on ordering these trailer brakes. All I can say is that it has worked so well I don't even remember ordering it or which trailer I have it on!

by: Terry Murphy05/18/2017

These are outstanding backing plates and brakes setups. I ordered four of these for my 1997 Sunnybrook fifth wheel. Everything is preassembled! All I had to do was adjust the brakes a little to get the new hubs over them and that was all. Five nuts to remove and replace. Great product!

The Drums, Bearings and Backing plates I installed from your company have worked GREAT! I have not had a single issue with their operation. I even accidentally ordered the incorrect seals, and that was handled perfectly! Thanks so much for carrying and supplying QUALITY parts and having excellent customer service!

by: CT05/21/2024

I Was happy to receive the box with my brakes. However, the box was ripped on one side to the middle of the front. Once we opened the box the brakes were surrounded by paper for protection but not in the middle. That is, in between the brakes thus damaging, chipping one of the brakes. Because we needed them right away, they were installed. They work well. My suggestion for future deliveries of heavy parts such as ours use better protection on each part to avoid any damage. Thank You

eTrailer shipped promptly and the brake kit was a perfect fit. Have bought from them before and will continue.

I inspected the brakes during my annual maintenance last week and they looked very good after towing my camper across the US last year. Im very pleased with them.

by: Samuel05/02/2021

Who knew lack of forward progress could be so satisfying.

After being pushed around by my new trailer, from a highly respected manufacturer, I sought help. First from a repair shop and then a friend with some experience working on trailer brakes.

When he pulled the first drum, we were both shocked. It was covered in bearing grease. Turns out the rear seals on all four wheels had been blown out and the drums were coated in grease along with the backing plates and brake shoes.

i ordered new self adjusting trailer brakes from etrailer, and the my buddy and I got dirty. Several cans of brake clean and scuffed knuckles later, My new trailer now stops like a new trailer.

I can't thank etrailer and my buddy enough.

After a year and a few thousand miles, my new trailer brakes just seem to be getting better. Thank for this solid product and, as always, great service.

by: John05/11/2024

The customer service was Great. Delivery was fast. However the four break assemblies were shipped without individual boxing/padding in a 2ft X 4ft x 6” box. One of the assemblies had a 1/4”chip out of the edge of a break pad and on another assembly, a break shoe became dislodged from it’s upper seat. With such strong springs, these assemblies must have been really thrown around should have been individually boxed or padded. I was able to correctly position the break shoe.

by: Scott05/28/2024

We had a catastrophic brake failure on one wheel on a recent trip. These were an exact fit on our Dexter axles. Ordering was easy and shipping was quick. Installation was very straightforward. I think these are better quality than the originals.

by: NASCARFAN4303/22/2024

Items arrived on time. Packaging was tough for these items. One of the brake assemblies came apart probably during shipping. I have enough knowledge that I was able to put it back together and all assemblies fit well on my camper. Haven't tested it out yet as it is still winter here in NY. Hopefully brakes will work well.

by: Randy06/08/2020

I bought this item a year ago. etrailer was the only supplier that had the brakes with the automatic adjuster. As my trailer was originally equipped with this option, I wanted to replace it with an identical set-up. The original brakes were not worn but heavily rusted and did not provide the performance required.
The new brakes from e-trailer were reasonably priced, quick delivery, an exact match, and installation was just a few bolts and a couple of wires. My order was quickly processed and the customer service was great. My brakes automatically adjust and now stop my 10,000 lb trailer on a dime. I have owned them for a year with zero issues. Five stars all around. I would recommend this item to anyone looking for a great brake setup for a heavy trailer.
Thanks etrailer!

by: Robert02/12/2024

They were an exact replacement for the brakes on our 2019 Solitude 5th wheel. The replacement was an easy DIY and we have been more than satisfied with the product and it's performance since install. The transaction was quick and simple. Thank you

by: Al11/07/2023

Five star. shipping was slow. Product was great 14 K 14 plies under 2000 pounds independent suspension. Low fast and sassy. Yep that’s how I build them.

by: Michael08/24/2023

Ordering and shipping were seamless and quick. Assembly was a piece of cake! All drum brakes should be this easy! The only point I have is it appears the assemblies were banging together during shipping which damaged two wires on the one assembly. It was an easy fix with some shrink tubing. Maybe better packaging would help eliminate this in the future

by: Shawn12/02/2023

The price was great but after 100 miles one of them failed. The spring broke and the pad wore down to the metal and damaged the new Hub and drum I Replaced with it. I was on the road miles from my home and had to have a local shop pull it off and charge me for a whole new assembly. The other three I replace with this one worked great. I trailed 3,000 mile with no other problems. These are made in China and I took the chance. One bad one out of four not bad but it failing on my trip was a pain in the rear. Cost to repair just this one brake assembly and new hub/drum on the road was $[XX].

by: Highlyner05/18/2024

Brake assemblies arrived quickly and in great shape. Also very happy with your website and customer support. I’ll be back for more !!

by: David Mills03/20/2024

The order I received was not what I ordered. I was supposed to get 3500lb brake kit but I got the 7000lb assembly. I called customer service and Paula is shipping me the correct assembly parts. Maybe my order will be correct the second time.

by: Tom11/24/2023

Sorry for the delayed response, but I did not want to write until I was ready to give my purchase an "Excellent" rating. Although happily it has ended that way, it did not start well.

In short, the loaded backing plates were installed without incident on a 1967 Airstream before hitting the road on a camping trip. At some point, the brake controller gain was boosted after deciding something was wrong. It blew a fuse.

I was able to reassess my initial installation today. A wire from the last backing plate I checked was pinched hard enough to short between the new backing plate & axle flange to short to ground.

It is all good now, and my antique classic stops on a dime. I have enjoyed every part I have bought from etrailer; keep up the Excellent work!

Tom

  • Comparing the etrailer Electric Brake Kit and the Dexter Electric Brake Assemblies
  • In all honesty I would go with the etrailer Electric Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA for a few important reasons. They are self-Adjusting, and the brake pads themselves are fully bonded so that they last longer and offer more braking torque, plus they have less chance of cracking and crumbling due to the tapered edge circular grinding. Even though the Dexter Brake Assemblies, parts # 23-180 and # 23-181, are still durable, the etrailer kit definitely has more to offer in this situation. If...

Great, fast shipping. Some people have said it needs better packing. I ordered two (Right and Left). One did arrive "ajar". However, it's easy to fix. Just get a ten-inch piece of 2x4 wood, and a hammer and knock it back into place. Use the wood between the hammer and the brake as a cushion. I will write an update after I install them. I am happy with my purchase. I don't think any more packing would help the "jarring out of alignment". The brakes are sort of spring-loaded. It can happen because of the springs and bummpy transportation. I will post an update after I install them and use them. I don't anticipate any problems. This is a honest review and five stars happy.

The self-adjusting trailer brakes are great. After I installed them and had the wheels back on, I had a compulsive urge to take the dust covers off and begin turning the star-nut and adjust them. But, I resisted and after about a ten mile test drive with many traffic lights and a spin on the freeway, the brakes work great. There is no need to turn the star-nut by hand. It self-adjusts.

by: Jonathan04/16/2023

After fully installing, taking for a drive, they did not auto adjust. My truck brakes were hot and smelled so I know my truck did mist of the work. I felt the trailer brake drums, not even warm. Okay, they need to be adjusted. Not a problem. But after looking up a quick video to remind me how to set the brakes, I went for it. If you rrad etrailer's ultimate guide to to adjust the brakes, it calls for trailer to be jacked, remove plastic covers to access adjustment screw, turn until tire or drum difficult to remove. Then back off about 10 turns until slight drag of brake pads on drum. However, these chinese POS drums DONT HAVE A DAMN NOTCH for you to reverse the tightness. 25min later using with two screwdrivers, one to hold a spring retention plate and the second to try and reverse the screw on its thread, with no joy. Extremely frustrating to have to pull the tire of, then pry the damn drum off because the brakes are holding it on super tight. Once drum removed, the damn brake adjustment screw had tiny small catches shaped in the direction of tightening only, hence why my flathead kept slipping off and wouldnt release tension on the pads. Tried to jack other sides tire and tighten slowly...but oops one fricking click to far and have to repeat whole damn process. I took the time to write up this review as Im pissed and need to cool off before I have to remove second tire. What should have been a 2-2.5hr job has nearly doubled.

Of course they were difficult to manually adjust, since these are designed to self adjust. I am sorry that you had to do that Jonathan! I have gotten in contact with one of our installers and they have confirmed that even though these are self-adjusting brakes, there is a period after you first install them that you will need to break in the brakes. This could be why the brakes were not adjusting when you initially tried to use them. In order to Break them in, you will need to apply the brakes several times while moving slowly to allow them to self adjust to the correct tension. They will feel pretty weak at first until they reach the correct adjustment. So the easy solution for you would be to take out the trailer and while travelling slowly reach down and grab the manual override lever of the controller several times and youll feel the brakes start to grab harder and harder.

Jonathan

4/24/2023

My main point was the sprocket does not have a notch to reverse the tension. A service rep did point me in good direction to check voltage. Turns out I had to re-wire brake power line as I had greater than 1-1.5 voktage from truck to brake assy. My was 4-8 volts. Meant corrosiin in the wire. Re-wired, new crimp connections and viola, voktage within range. Also, etrailers guidance on how to adjust these brakes by driving and applying controllers manual over-ride is seriously understated. Perhaps because you sell so many brake assemblies that all you provide is blanket instructions. Fair enough. However, it took over 50 applications: driving up to 40mph, not touching vehicle brake, but only using brake controller manual override to slow the vehicle to 20-25mph. Agressive break-in is relative. Better upfront written description of this will help set the expectation of future buyers. Too bad actual mechanics arent the ones writing this stuff up and talking with customers.

Old brakes and new brakes. I know, I disturbed years of spider handy work, nasty. Totally happy with my first purchase and the fact that I got the right ones. I actually had no idea they came assembled like they do. I wouldn't of sand blasted and painted the base plates. So happy with the results. Thank you etrailer!

Jason

10/18/2023

Its been a year and a day since I last posted how happy I was with these brakes I purchased. I wish I could say that Ive taken this 1968 completely rebuilt from the ground up camper on a trip, but I cant. Im not done yet. I can tell you that I did hook up to the truck with the camper jacked up and was able to test the brakes and they worked perfectly. I also adjusted them because I had initially set them loosely to fit right on. Adjusting them can be sort of tricky, but etrailers videos are very helpful and I was able to set them just right. I would have been totally done this summer, but getting a new VIN number is currently in the works as well as curtains and cushions. Rebuilding old campers is not for everyone, but finding etrailer early on for me was another tool in the arsenal. Good luck everyone with your projects. Theres nothing like getting it done yourself.

These are an exact replacement in terms of size for the original brake assemblies. However, they have no where near the stopping power. After a couple iterations of manual adjustment and cranking the controller gain way up, they just don't work as well. I have no idea why. I have two axels with brakes on all wheels. The trailer is about 5500 lbs.

Mark

6/3/2024

Update: I finally traded the trailer in and no longer own it. The brakes did finally break in and the stopping power was almost as good as the factory brakes. In my case it took almost a year for them to work properly. Maybe I didnt use the trailer enough.

Purchased these to replace the Dexter brakes on my Coleman pop up camper. Install was straight forward. I adjusted the wheel a few turns then test fitted the drum until there was just a slight drag. I followed the break in instructions and the trailer stops nice and smooth.

Been almost a year since I installed these and probably have about 5,00 miles on them now. They work well, especially in the mountains with a 3200 pound single axle cargo trailer conversion pulled by a ‘21 Tacoma. Have not checked the pad wear yet but no squeaking sounds yet.

by: Jess12/11/2023

This is the trailer I built using your spindles and electric brakes.
It towed beautifully from Texas to Kansas City and back for the World of Wheels.

by: Richard10/06/2023

I'm only giving 4 stars for the incredibly poor packaging of my order. The drums I ordered were thrown in on top of the trailer brake kit, and knocked the brake shoes out of alignment. After installing the backing plates, I had to take them both apart to put the shoes back in place. Other than that, works well.

by: Waterskier05/17/2024

Shipped promptly and packaged well. As promised, they were any easy swap out for the brakes on the trailer. Had to do an initial adjustment on one set that was a little tricky as I had never done that before. However, etrailer had an excellent YouTube video that showed me step by step how to install and adjust. Took them for a test drive and all seemed fine. First long haul soon.

by: Nick06/11/2022

The right brake assembly arrived with the adjuster sprocket and lever misaligned and not even touching one of the shoes, so I had to disassemble that half and put it back together correctly. The assemblies also didn’t come with nuts to bolt them to the axles, so I had to get those separately. Otherwise, they seem to be a good value, especially with the free and quick shipping.

You are correct, these brake assemblies come with the following: Left-hand [drivers-side] brake assembly, right-hand [passengers-side] brake assembly, and mounting bolts. However, the nuts and lock washers are sold separately. We recommend part # BRKH10B.

by: Steven 05/09/2024

Easy installation; initial adjustment advised. While these will self adjust after installation, without an initial adjustment, they could take a while to actually get to the point they start working. I've been running these for over a year now and they work great.

by: Barry10/04/2022

I ordered 2 set of the brake kits for a tandem axle trailer. I have not installed them yet, so can't say how they work, so giving an "average" rating. What I can say is the packaging was about 1/2 star below poor. For heavy parts, brown paper was used to wrap the brake kits. Absolutely no padding and then they were sent in an oversize box. One of the brake shoes came off of the post during shipping. I was able to get it back where it was supposed to be, with about 15 minutes of grunting clamped to my work table. I called the order in and discussed the poor shipping/packaging in previous reviews and was assured those sort of shipping problems were in the past. I guess they have not been resolved. No damage seems to have occurred to any of the brake kits, but, I will be madder than a wet hen if I find out otherwise after installing the parts on my trailer.

by: Trevor01/26/2024

My 14 foot doolittle trailer didn't have brakes but had a brake ready axle. These worked well. Do require a fair amount of wiring if add to a trailer that does not already have brakes. Haul my side by side in a triples configuration with my fifth wheel camper and they self adjust well and are very responsive to changes in gain settings. Would recommend

Used these on a custom built offroad camping trailer. Easy install, just don't forget to order the mounting hardware. These bolted right up to the Timbren suspension (ASR3500S06) in about 5 minutes. Also used the 10 inch 5x5 drums to mate to Jeep Wrangler wheels. I would recommend this product and etrailer.com as a whole. Great customer service and fast shipping.

i have ZERO trailer braking issues after installing these brakes.

by: Art03/11/2018

Situation:

This was an upgrade
to my 2015 Suretrac 5x8 square tube single axle utility trailer. The trailer was not equipped with them when I purchased it. I quickly realized after two trips with a full load that they would easily improve safety.

My tow vehicle came equipped with an integrated brake controller as well as a 7 way rv plug.

I performed this installation with the trailer raised up an only a inch or two, resting on safety stands. !! Of course, a lift would make this operation go much easier. !!

Installation:

THE etrailer parts were easy to assemble. All fit perfectly together. Obviously I did have to adjust the brakes a small amount to get them within the activation reach.

Consideration:

1) To insure correct wiring it required extra patience and planning. I found the information regarding what wire activated what to be a bit confusing online. Using an inexpensive test light proved extremely helpful. For me it helped to determine from the start each connection point and color code that were meant for each other (in my situation changes in coding took place). To make it go smoothly I drew our a schematic before getting settled underneath. Note: that I have included images of the old flat plug wiring along with the coding.

2) If I were to do this again, I WOULD HAVE spliced the wiring to both L & R brakes before hand. Lying flat on my stomach underneath the trailer and trying to both properly strip and crimp the short pieces of wire from each brake to the 12 gauge lengths of wire was a little tedious.

*Parts list from etrailer:

(QTY)

(1) ET7WK Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit

(2) AKHD-545-35-K Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly - 3,500-lb Axles - 10" Diameter - 5 on 4-1/2
(1) AKEBRK-35-SA Electric Trailer Brake Kit - Self-Adjusting - 10" - Left and Right Hand Assemblies - 3,500 lbs

(1) BRKH10B Mounting Hardware for 10" Brake Assemblies

*Additional wiring (below), ties, a few screws, electrical tape, extra crimps and stud crimps, etc. were locally sourced for connecting from the box upgrade kit to both L&R brakes.

(1) 12ft section of white 12 gauge

(1) 12ft section of black 12 gauge

*Additional grease, both tube and tub type were purchased along with large rubber gloves for greasing and hub installation.

NOTE: at this date I have NOT yet driven the trailer with the brakes. I had only tested them by hand spinning each wheel while having someone actuate the [trailer brakes only] from the vehicle.

by: 02/24/2024

In use about a year, maybe 100-200 miles. One side was fine but the other locked up the wheel. Massively overtighten the self adjusting mechanism locked up the wheel. Took it apart and will try again but now I dont trust it for long trip.

Once my brother taught me how to install these trailer brakes, it couldn't have gone any better. I towed the trailer with these new brakes 2000 miles each way over mountain ranges with absolutely no problems or issues that I didn't cause myself. I didn't put enough grease in the bearings, and they got a little warm. Using the bearing buddies, I had for them made it easy to add more grease and the trailer pulled fantastic and stopped as intended. I'll definitely be coming back to etrailer for my towing needs.

My trailer brakes were weak, so I checked them out... 3 of the 4 sets had linings that had come of the shoes. I started checking prices on replacement parts, but found the price of an entire assembly cheaper than a few parts. Called etrailer and spoke with Ashley to confirm part numbers and availability. Ordered a set of 4 complete brake assemblies for my trailer.
The parts arrived within a few days. I replaced all 4 sets in about an hour and 15 minutes! Completely straight forward process! An impact wrench will help remove the 4 nuts from old assembly.
My trailer now has brakes again!! Thanks to Ashley and etrailer for good prices, good information, quick shipping, and great replacement parts!

Pictures show a lining off my original brakes; one new assembly; one new assembly installed; and finally both assemblies installed on one side of my trailer.

the packaging was poor at best. nuts and washers were loose in the box hardly any packaging in the box and because of how it was packaged the insulation on some of the wires was worn away and wires were exposed. I wont be buying from them again unless I absolutely have to.

I understand your frustration with receiving the order in this manner. I will share this feedback with our shipping department and I will have our customer service team reach out to you.

The brakes are fine. Easy to install. Disappointed in either quality control or shipping. One of the brakes had both wires cut. I had to splice a new set of wires inside the brake. Easy for me to do, it just made the install take longer. I've included pictures of the damaged wires as well as the other brake that had no damage.

One year later, brakes are working fine. It is December and we are about ready to ship off to Florida. They will get a real workout on the interstates while traveling. I still think etrailer’s customer service is the best in the business.

  • What Is The Difference Between Dexter And etrailer Self-Adjusting Brake Assemblies
  • There are a couple of differences between the etrailer # AKEBRK-35-SA and the Dexter # 23-468-469 brake assemblies. The pad on the etrailer brake is a little thick so that means the etrailer brakes will last a bit longer. Also, the etrailer brakes are cut so the edges are a bit smoother than the Dexter brakes which are snapped off of a long strip.
