The packaging of this order was extremely poor. Two of the brake assemblies had to be put back into position, multiple chips to the brake pads and one of the wires had been smashed to the point it had to be cut out and spliced. All of this damage was due to the fact that the brake assemblies were free to move in the extra large box they were shipped in. The piece of paper that was in the box was a sad attempt at packaging material.
I have not attempted to install the replacements at this point.

I would day with there being chips in the brake pads, I would lean towards replacing them. We will be reaching out to you to see what you would like to do. Please keep an eye on your email.

by: John05/11/2024

The customer service was Great. Delivery was fast. However the four break assemblies were shipped without individual boxing/padding in a 2ft X 4ft x 6” box. One of the assemblies had a 1/4”chip out of the edge of a break pad and on another assembly, a break shoe became dislodged from it’s upper seat. With such strong springs, these assemblies must have been really thrown around should have been individually boxed or padded. I was able to correctly position the break shoe.

Good value for the $. Exact fit and fast shipping. Stopping power a little bit lower than original Dexter Brakes

These brakes are a great value. It takes a while to break them in, but after that they offer the same stopping power as the OEM brakes.

by: Christopher05/04/2023

Box was damaged in shipping. Brakes pads were shifted off the pivot stud. Realigned. Looks like they're ok. I won't know for sure until they're installed and operating. Still an excellent so far. Good price, and fast shipping.

Adjusted brakes about two months after installation and all are working good. Just make sure the magneto wire clamp is secured to the brake arm

I sent a question to etrailer.com Re: brake assemblies for my 1964 Airstream RV. I got a prompt response explaining how to measure the old brakes on the trailer to correctly size the brakes I needed. Finding the size allowed me to research the hub & bearing assemblies I also needed. I ordered them all with confidence they'd fit. Installed the self adjusting Electric Brake Assemblies along with the Hub kit with bearings, All parts fit together perfectly. Thanks George.

I’m very satisfied with the Brake and Hub Assy’s. I purchased from you guys. I recently had a question regarding Lug Nut Torque on the Hubs. I couldn’t locate any info on the instructions that came in the Boxes nor could I find this Info on the website. I looked in the FAQ’s area & also on the parts info page for the parts I bought. I like finding the Info myself, Usually after hours. I ended up having to call you guys. I talked to Sammie at Customer Service, She didn’t have the exact but did know where to get it. She sent me the Torque Chart with the Torque settings for the Hub and Wheel Type I have. I think that this Info Should be included in the box with the new Hubs and Lug Nuts, Plus easily found on the website. Your Videos and Tips are a Great Extra Plus for us DIY’s like me. I Appreciate Your effforts!! Thanks Again,

The brake assemblies look good. I have not yet received the hub/drum assemblies. the packaging for the brake assemblies is totally unacceptable. the cardboard box was two and one half times larger than appropriate and had one piece of paper stuffed in to hold the contents in place. when I lifted the box I was sickened to hear the product roll from one end of the box to the other. Luckily there was little damage except for paint. Hopefully the hub/drum assemblies are packaged better.

by: Donnie04/04/2022

I would have to say that the self adjust drums were a nightmare! They actually wore completely out in less than 6 months with one assembly completely and literally exploding. They seemed to have been over adjusting themselves. They never really gave any real noticeable stopping power. I will never have another trailer with drum brakes. We had to have those brakes warrantied out and we upgraded to the disk brake conversion which is a night and day difference! We love the disk brakes that we received from etrailer!

I suspect that the brakes were not seated when they were installed which can cause the brakes to seem weak until they are worn in. This in turn may cause you to over brake with which wear out the brakes quicker. When installing new brakes, both manual and never adjust, you will want to drive the trailer out into an open area, like an empty parking lot. Get up to around 40 MPH and apply the manual override on your brake controller. Make sure the brake controller is set high enough where it will fully engage the trailer brakes. Do not hit the brake pedal during this time, as you want to slow down your vehicle and trailer with only the trailer brakes. You will most likely have to do this about 20 to 30 times to properly seat the brakes. When you feel like your brakes are properly seated, pull over and check for signs that youre done: a bit of smoke is normal and your brakes should be very hot. The brakes should read 350-400 degrees with a temperature gun If you do not see these signs then repeat until the brakes are properly seated.

These brake assemblies were an exact duplicate of the originals I was replacing. If you zoom on the pictures I took the two right side ratchet assemblies are knocked loose due to the shipping being dropped, no fault of the etrailer. The sturdy shipping box came in very handy for kneeling on while working on the brakes as you can see I’m working in the area with gravel all around the wheels. This is my second purchase from etrailer and both purchases have arrived quickly and worthy of their price.

It has taken one of the bothersome maintenance jobs from the check list I had to do to have my 5th wheel road ready.

by: Derek12/20/2023

They don’t seem to be self adjusting. I did an initial adjustment and have had them on for a year now and they don’t seem to grab very strong. I have these on a tandem axle flatbed and all four engage but I can’t get the tires to drag on gravel even with the settings all the way up. I just redid all the wiring on my trailer and ran new lines, all soldered, and still no improvement. It’s possible it has something to do with my tow vehicle (2500 Cummins) but I have it set to “heavy electric” and it’s not engaging. The old brakes I replaced actually worked better than these ones.

Based off the info you gave, it sounds to me like it might be a bedding issue. Before you start that process, though, you want to make sure that your brakes are adjusted loose enough that you can turn your wheels by hand but tight enough that they arent able to freely spin. Once that is done, take a look at step four of the attached article. It will walk you through the bedding process.

by: Michael M05/23/2024

Damaged in shipping. Like other reviews have stated, etrailer throws these heavy things loose in a cheap, thin box and sends it. Product arrived with box ripped open. Brakes loose, smacking into each other, which left chips in the brake pads. Come on etrailer - do better. There's no excuse for shipping like this.

by: Thomas 06/06/2024

Arrived two days later than promised. Packaging was inadequate, two of the four assemblies had the brake shoes out of position due to handling, or the package being thrown. Otherwise they seem to be OK. No installation instructions in the package. Not yet installed. Packaging seems to be the main complaint for others as well.

by: Terry Murphy05/18/2017

These are outstanding backing plates and brakes setups. I ordered four of these for my 1997 Sunnybrook fifth wheel. Everything is preassembled! All I had to do was adjust the brakes a little to get the new hubs over them and that was all. Five nuts to remove and replace. Great product!

5/18/2018

The Drums, Bearings and Backing plates I installed from your company have worked GREAT! I have not had a single issue with their operation. I even accidentally ordered the incorrect seals, and that was handled perfectly! Thanks so much for carrying and supplying QUALITY parts and having excellent customer service!

by: Mike 05/30/2024

Etrailer sent me an email regarding a one year follow up on ordering these trailer brakes. All I can say is that it has worked so well I don't even remember ordering it or which trailer I have it on!

by: CT05/21/2024

I Was happy to receive the box with my brakes. However, the box was ripped on one side to the middle of the front. Once we opened the box the brakes were surrounded by paper for protection but not in the middle. That is, in between the brakes thus damaging, chipping one of the brakes. Because we needed them right away, they were installed. They work well. My suggestion for future deliveries of heavy parts such as ours use better protection on each part to avoid any damage. Thank You

by: Samuel05/02/2021

Who knew lack of forward progress could be so satisfying.

After being pushed around by my new trailer, from a highly respected manufacturer, I sought help. First from a repair shop and then a friend with some experience working on trailer brakes.

When he pulled the first drum, we were both shocked. It was covered in bearing grease. Turns out the rear seals on all four wheels had been blown out and the drums were coated in grease along with the backing plates and brake shoes.

i ordered new self adjusting trailer brakes from etrailer, and the my buddy and I got dirty. Several cans of brake clean and scuffed knuckles later, My new trailer now stops like a new trailer.

I can't thank etrailer and my buddy enough.

After a year and a few thousand miles, my new trailer brakes just seem to be getting better. Thank for this solid product and, as always, great service.

eTrailer shipped promptly and the brake kit was a perfect fit. Have bought from them before and will continue.

I inspected the brakes during my annual maintenance last week and they looked very good after towing my camper across the US last year. Im very pleased with them.

by: Scott05/28/2024

We had a catastrophic brake failure on one wheel on a recent trip. These were an exact fit on our Dexter axles. Ordering was easy and shipping was quick. Installation was very straightforward. I think these are better quality than the originals.

by: NASCARFAN4303/22/2024

Items arrived on time. Packaging was tough for these items. One of the brake assemblies came apart probably during shipping. I have enough knowledge that I was able to put it back together and all assemblies fit well on my camper. Haven't tested it out yet as it is still winter here in NY. Hopefully brakes will work well.

by: Randy06/08/2020

I bought this item a year ago. etrailer was the only supplier that had the brakes with the automatic adjuster. As my trailer was originally equipped with this option, I wanted to replace it with an identical set-up. The original brakes were not worn but heavily rusted and did not provide the performance required.
The new brakes from e-trailer were reasonably priced, quick delivery, an exact match, and installation was just a few bolts and a couple of wires. My order was quickly processed and the customer service was great. My brakes automatically adjust and now stop my 10,000 lb trailer on a dime. I have owned them for a year with zero issues. Five stars all around. I would recommend this item to anyone looking for a great brake setup for a heavy trailer.
Thanks etrailer!

by: Robert02/12/2024

They were an exact replacement for the brakes on our 2019 Solitude 5th wheel. The replacement was an easy DIY and we have been more than satisfied with the product and it's performance since install. The transaction was quick and simple. Thank you

by: Michael08/24/2023

Ordering and shipping were seamless and quick. Assembly was a piece of cake! All drum brakes should be this easy! The only point I have is it appears the assemblies were banging together during shipping which damaged two wires on the one assembly. It was an easy fix with some shrink tubing. Maybe better packaging would help eliminate this in the future

by: Al11/07/2023

Five star. shipping was slow. Product was great 14 K 14 plies under 2000 pounds independent suspension. Low fast and sassy. Yep that’s how I build them.

by: Shawn12/02/2023

The price was great but after 100 miles one of them failed. The spring broke and the pad wore down to the metal and damaged the new Hub and drum I Replaced with it. I was on the road miles from my home and had to have a local shop pull it off and charge me for a whole new assembly. The other three I replace with this one worked great. I trailed 3,000 mile with no other problems. These are made in China and I took the chance. One bad one out of four not bad but it failing on my trip was a pain in the rear. Cost to repair just this one brake assembly and new hub/drum on the road was $[XX].

by: David Mills03/20/2024

The order I received was not what I ordered. I was supposed to get 3500lb brake kit but I got the 7000lb assembly. I called customer service and Paula is shipping me the correct assembly parts. Maybe my order will be correct the second time.

by: Highlyner05/18/2024

Brake assemblies arrived quickly and in great shape. Also very happy with your website and customer support. I’ll be back for more !!

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Brakes for 7K Axle
  • Dexter does make excellent products, but in this case I recommend going with our Electric Trailer Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA over the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-464-465. They both have the same features except that the etrailer.com option has pads that are cut during production as opposed to snapped off. This results in the etrailer.com brake pads lasting longer and having better resistance against wear and tear.

  • Dexter vs. etrailer 7,000 lb Electric Trailer Brakes
  • The difference really comes down to brand recognition, price, and warranty, but apart from that they are very similar. Dexter is a leading brand and people know they are getting quality, hence the higher price. They Dexter also do have a 5-year warranty compare to the etrailer brand's 1-year warranty. Going with the etrailer brand doesn't mean you're getting a bad set of brakes though; in fact, with thousands of customer reviews on both sets, each is rated very close to 5 stars. Really...

  • Comparing etrailer Electric Trailer Brake Assemblies to Dexter Brakes
  • There is a difference. The etrailer brakes specifically, such as # AKEBRK-7-SA, have pad material that is cut rather than snapped off a long strip. The result is a cleaner cut pad that is less likely to crack or have pieces fall off of it. Otherwise they are pretty much identical. So really the etrailer brakes are a much better value. I have included a link to a video on brake set # AKEBRK-7-SA for you.

  • Comparing the etrailer Electric Brake Kit and the Dexter Electric Brake Assemblies
  • In all honesty I would go with the etrailer Electric Brake Kit # AKEBRK-7-SA for a few important reasons. They are self-Adjusting, and the brake pads themselves are fully bonded so that they last longer and offer more braking torque, plus they have less chance of cracking and crumbling due to the tapered edge circular grinding. Even though the Dexter Brake Assemblies, parts # 23-180 and # 23-181, are still durable, the etrailer kit definitely has more to offer in this situation. If...

They are actually a little nicer than the Dexter assemblies in my opinion because the brake shoe material is cut instead of scored and broken off so there is a cleaner line for less wear and tear at the edge of the material. Fantastic. The new brakes are awesome and have kept our camping trips across the North East US safe and secure. They were a cinch to install and are working as desired. Thank you

by: Tim08/12/2023

I did not get a chance to try the brakes because of the condition they arrived in. the brakes where thrown in to a box raw, there was no individual packaging and no padding. The brakes banged around in the box and chipped the brake lining, making them useless. the banging around broke free the springs and pieces where lost through holes in the poorly boxed package. VERY disappointed.

by: Todd07/26/2023

Brakes look great, but they were packeged by a four year old, resulting in the box being punctured, and the brake parts rattling around, to the extent that two of the four pair arrived missing parts. The springs rattled off, the adjusters rattled out, and parts fell out of the box. To their credit, a return label was issued promptly, and replacements sent right away. But still. Don't they ship items like this every day, hundreds of times a day?

by: James01/27/2024

I can’t honestly rate these shoes due to the failure of the shaft seals in the new brake drums I also purchased. As of now my brake shoes will not stop my trailer after cleaning the grease saturated shoes.

by: Jason03/19/2021

I ordered these to replace the original brakes on my trailer after I started having problems with mine (see details below if interested). They are good quality and were easy to mount and assemble. They definitely made a difference in how well my trailer is braking. I definitely recommend these if they are what you need.

However, I will say that the shipping was delayed by about 4 days. This may not be etrailer's fault, but they use UPS and I've been having horrible luck with UPS's shipping service lately. Everything has been delayed. So just be aware that if you order with the standard ground with UPS these will most likely not arrive on time.

The second problem that I had was that I ordered a set of drum/hub combos to go with these on a separate order. After 2 days of seeing no progress on my order I had to email and call to find out that the order was delayed. There was no update from etrailer without me asking. I ended up having to cancel that order and purchase through a local supplier whom I will likely start using from now on.

To detail the braking problems, I purchased my 2008 Toy Hauler about two months ago. We've towed about 1,200 miles with it so far and I noticed from day one that the brakes weren't as responsive as they should be. As we were entering our neighborhood from our last trip my Tekonsha Prodigy 3 started flashing red and reading that there was a shortage and that I had a brake overload and that there were no brakes. This was fairly spiritic but eventually became constant. Based off of information I found from posts on this site, it seemed like it might be one of the magnets not making sufficient contact with the drum. It seems like this was the case. During my repair, I found that one of my grease seals had blown and grease had gotten into one of the brake assemblies and it looked like that entire hub/assembly/etc. had stopped working properly. After replacing the entire brake assembly, drum/hub, bearings and seals on all four wheels everything is working great! I probably only needed to replace the brake assemblies, but decided that for another $350 I would have peace of mind knowing that everything is at it's best!

Thanks etrailer for the helpful information and quality parts!

by: Mike02/13/2024

The assembly's are definitely quality pieces as usual with etrailer, but the packing is hands down the worst I've ever seen. I ordered 4 complete brake units, and when I opened the box every one of them had banged around enough that they were totally disassembled. The box they were in was 2'x3'x8" with one piece of tissue paper. I will definitely continue to use etrailer because of the price and quantity of the parts, but I will definitely talk to someone about packaging before I order.

by: JD05/24/2024

Brakes were great fit right in . Would pay xtra in the future if they came with the grade 8 bolts also almost always old bolts are unusable

by: Muriah C05/10/2024

They came in a timely manner. Installation was simple and the customer service was optimal.

by: Fattony06/14/2022

My order came damaged. I feel you should not have to wait 22 minutes on hold to talk to a customer service person. I have tried calling many times and the wait time is almost the same. I do not have the time to wait. I guess I am going to buy local since the cost wasn’t too different. I guess it is only about the money. There’s no such thing as quality anymore.

by: Ryan09/26/2022

Great affordable brakes. Adjusted them and tested them out and they work great. Using a trailer brake controller in the truck as well and have no complaints yet. Towed about 5k miles on this system so far. I saw a ton of those advertisements for wires that have heat shrink and are waterproof and you don't need to solder. Saying when you apply heat to them, it melts the solder. Tested them out and they actually work great and are waterproof.

by: Robert 12/01/2023

Changed out all four brakes on my FW. E Trailer brand brake kit is well made and just as good as the costly name brand. After a year and about 6k miles brakes are fine no problems at all.

by: Adam06/29/2018

These were exact fit, easy to replace and would definitely recommend. Definitely invest in the brake spoon tool ( bought one with my order) for adjusting these after the wheel is back on. Definitely worth it and etrailer nailed it again. In the photo, the axle on the right is the new brake assembly and the one on the left..... well that is the reason I bought four new brake assemblies!!!!! Thanks.

by: John02/10/2019

Ordered complete brakes and bearings for 8 wheel 16 ton trailer. All mounted up very nicely and I am very pleased with the result. In addition to bearings and brakes I also replaced the lights and added a new 7 pin plug incl a new battery and emergency trailer brake and wirebox. I had never done any of these repairs before, but followed the tutorial videos on e-trailers site. Very happy with result and will recommend e-trailers to anyone that need trailer stuff. Keep up the good work. Thanks.

by: Dean 09/14/2023

It took me a while to get to this project. The parts came much sooner than I expected. I was able to completely overhaul my trailer brakes in about 8 hours or, maybe less. The parts all worked great. The staff was SO very helpful in making sure I got the right parts. I really cant wait to use them again!!!

by: Cornelius05/25/2024

Good customer service, on time delivery, packaged arrived as ordered. And bonus they followed up with personal email for questions

by: Reid08/19/2023

First, your representation of the price of the Brake Kit is completely deceptive. The kits for my 2016 Keystone Cougar were represented to be approximately $[XX]. There was no mention or indication that this price was a per axle price. I ordered the kits thinking I would get enough kits for my tandem axle trailer, and only got to kits enough for one axle. That is, to me, deceptive and predatory priceing. If you advertise that these are the kits for a specific trailer, then you should price and ship enough kits to complete the job. Again, I consider your representation of the kits price as deceptive and predatory. I ordered a second set of kits simply because I was in a hurry to complete my brake job...not because I was satisfied. In the future I hope your price reflects to other consumers that the price is per axle, and not enough for specific trailers as I found out.

Second, when I talked with your representative Kate, who was very courteous, she said my order would be delivered on a Wednesday. When I received the email order and shipping confirmation, the delivery date changed to Thursday. When I received the second set of kits, the box was damaged and almost falling apart. Your shipping people did not put padding on both upper and lower parts in the box. As a result, when I received the kits, the adjusting bolt and spring were off of the one set. Had the box opened a little more, the parts would have been lost. The other fact is that I had to personally reinstall the adjuster and spring on to the shoes. More care in packing would have elimited this problem.

Third, I will not purchase anything else from E-brake Co., and I will warn my friends of my problems with you and your predatory pricing structure. My project should have been completed over a week sooner that it is going to be.

The brake kits seem to be of a very good quality. Your business qualities, to me, are not.
