This is strange because the Brakemaster, # RM-9160, has only one electrical component and that is the breakaway switch. It would not draw any power unless you pulled the pin out. If it is drawing power then something is either wrong with the switch or there is a wire somewhere that is possibly damaged and shorting out. But that would draw more current than 400 milliamps.

The two most likely issues that could cause your lighting problem are a weak ground or bent contacts inside the driver-side vehicle tail light connectors.

What probably happened was that the converter box has blown. This means that it has done its job. The short on the trailer blew the box instead of damaging the vehicle wiring. There is no fix for this and the wiring harness on the vehicle will have to be replaced.

I spoke with my contact at Thule and she informed me of a couple possible solutions for you. But we before you attempt anything you should verify that the lock core of your rack has the same number etched into it as the number etched into the key.

On 4-pole, 6-pole and 7-pole wiring setups the stop and turn signals are combined for each side of the vehicle. The green wire in a 4-pole typically carries both right turn and stop signals and the yellow wire carries left turn and stop. This is an extremely unusual problem, but there is something we can check to get started and see what the issue might be.
