The most probable cause for not getting a display when you apply the truck brake, but getting a display when manually activate the override is a bad connection in the stop light circuit. The stop light circuit is the red wire coming off the brake controller that goes to the cold side of your brake pedal switch. ER is not one of the display messages covered by the troubleshooting chart in the instructions for the Primus # TK90160 which I have linked to the right for you. Because you are seeing ER that is a good indication that there is a major internal problem and the controller will need to be replaced which is the case with other Tekonsha controllers that display ER. Your best bet would be to trace the running light circuit from the trailer connector all the way back to the lamps. You will want to pay careful attention to the point where the running light circuit for the right side of the trailer splits off from the circuit for the left side. The first thing to do is figure out if the problem is on your tow vehicle or your trailer. To test this you'll simply need to use a circuit tester # PTW2992 and check the various pin locations for function. For a connector that has both a 4-Way and 7-Way, like the # ETBC7, it would be best to check both connectors so you know if it's that circuit or just that connector. Sounds like your Trooper has separate turn signals from the brake lights and what you are trying to do is wire up a trailer connector that is designed for combined circuits. This is a fairly common problem and the solution is to wire in a signal converter like part # RM-732.

The issue you are finding with your 2001 Isuzu Rodeo and your trailer doesn't have to do with the 4 wire vehicle side and the 5 wire trailer 4-way. Many trailers use what is called a wishbone harness that will run two wires to the same pin for the running lights. This style of harness simply make it so no jump wire is run from one side of the trailer to the other to pick up that running light signal because it is independently run to each side from the connector.

The turn signals and brake lights should be on the same circuit. What I think may be happening is when the brake lights are on, they draw more power. When more power is drawn, this is usually when you will see ground wiring problems.
First, I would make sure that the vehicle side connector shows the same pin for turn signal and brake lights using a circuit tester like # PTW2993. Next, check to make sure both the trailer side and vehicle side connectors are free of dirt and corrosion.

The PL error code on the Primus brake controller # TK90160 indicates that power is interrupted when stepping on the brake pedal. Check the connection of the red wire. It should be attached to the brake switch wire that has power only when the brake pedal is pressed. If it has power at any other time then it is not the correct wire.
