Great question, and I think you're on the right track. Even though the Curt Ball Mount # C45100 is rated for 3,500 lbs towing/350 lbs tongue while in the rise position, I like to have some kind of safety margin so that I'm not constantly checking to make sure the ball mount is holding up.
For your application I recommend the MaxxTow Adjustable-Height Ball Mount # MT70068 because the weight ratings are 5,000 lbs towing/500 lbs tongue whether you are using it in the rise or drop position.... view full answer...

I found that the maximum towing capacity of the 2002 Mercedes ML500 is 5,000 pounds. However I do recommend checking your owner's manual to confirm this capacity. If it is 5,000 pounds then you could tow a trailer weighing up to that much.
I recommend trailer hitch # 75087. It is rated for 500 pounds tongue weight and 5,000 pounds gross trailer weight. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you.

It looks like the 1969 Ford Mustang can weight between 3,200 and 3,500 pounds. Trailer hitch # 13342 for the 2010 Mercedes ML-Class is rated for 3,500 pounds. Provided that the combined weight of your Mustang and the tow dolly you use is under 3,500 pounds when ready to tow then this hitch can handle it.
I also recommend etrailer ball mount kit # 989900. It comes with 2 ball mounts; one with a 3/4 inch rise or 2 inch drop and one with a 2-3/4 inch rise or 4 inch drop. It also includes... view full answer...
When we installed the Draw Tit Hitch part# 75087 on a 2003 Mercedes M Class we found that the hitch pin hole stuck out the exact same distance as the furthest point out on the rear bumper. So that means the hitch opening itself would stick out 2-1/2 inches past the rear bumper. view full answer...

The only hitch receiver available for 2010 Mercedes-Benz ML350 diesels is a class 3 hitch like the Curt item # C13102 with a 3500 lbs weight limit. The aftermarket hitch receivers do not have the same towing capacity as the OEM hitch receivers which is causing such a wide discrepancy in weight capacity. This has to do with the ML350 diesel ADBLUE tank and its placement by the spare tire. There is not enough space to attach a large enough hitch receiver that is bigger than a class 3. The Reese Steadi-Flex Weight Distribution System # RP66558 has a shipping weight of 73 lbs so when you take away the packaging that leaves you with about 70 lbs.
Although it would seem that you would need to include the weight of the weight distribution system in your calculations you actually only need to add up the loaded tongue weight of your trailer as well as the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle.
As long as that total is within the 400 lb - 600 lb tongue... view full answer...
