The issue you are having is common on Chevy Uplanders because of the multiplex wiring system. Due to the low voltage at the stop light switch, you will want to tap the red wire from your brake controller # 5504 into the high mount stop light wire coming out of the BCM.

I contacted our representative at Tekonsha and he informed me that they have just released a tech bulletin on wiring a brake controller on the Chevrolet Uplander. He informed me that you cannot run the stoplight wire directly to the brake light switch.

I suggest your mechanic begin his troubleshooting at the bag that deflated. If he inflates the bag to about 30-psi (near its 35-psi maximum) and applies soapy water to all connection points and the bag surface too he can check for air leaks.
