I was able to find the manual for the 2018 Audi Q5 and I've attached a the page that it talks about tire chains; from what I'm seeing it says to only install chains on the rear tires, so I would recommend double checking- there is more clearance at the rear of the vehicle which is why I believe this is the recommendation. Regardless of where you install them, you are correct in that you need chains or a fine mesh tire sock that is no taller than 13.5mm.

I do have an option that will allow you to open the rear hatch on your 2014 Audi Q5 with a bike rack installed, however, it is not reccomend to open the rear hatch of a vehicle while a trunk mount bike rack is installed either with or without the bikes attached. It sounds like you have a classic ground issue with the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer part # C56404 on the 2016 Audi Q5. When the wiring harness does not have a good ground connection it will make the functions act erratically. Some functions will illuminate while others won't.
