When installing the etrailer # e98844 on your 2020 Toyota Highlander, you'll need to scrape the undercoat so that the mounting flange of the hitch and the vehicle's frame member are in direct metal-to-metal contact. On the Tekonsha PRODIGY Brake Controller - Proportional, # 90885, with the Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7, I recommend that you run the power wire,the ground wire, and we also run the blue brake feed thru the firewall by finding a rubber grommet and pushing it thru the grommet. If needed a small slice in the grommet might help, but anytime you are cutting by wires you need to be extra careful so as not to damage any wires.

You will splice one wire of the Break-Away Switch to the electric brake wire coming from the trailer side connector. The other wire on the switch connects to the break away box. It should not matter which wire is used for which function.

You'll want to scrape off the undercoating so that the hitch will mount to a flat surface. If you expose any bare metal from the scraping, you can shoot any bare metal with a quick shot of rust inhibiting spray paint if you wish. Since the hitch and the vehicle body are both constructed of steel, you needn't worry about any galvanic corrosion. If you leave the undercoat in place, it could deteriorate over time and leave the hitch loosened. Which would be bad.

Using the Buyers Products hitch extender part # 3371804017 with the ball mount part # BM20 would work well but you'd need to be really careful not to exceed the reduced capacity due to the hitch extender. The storage bin on the left side of the cargo area on a 2008 Toyota Highlander is held in by the fasteners but it also has some tabs that fit into the side of the cargo area side panels. The resistance you are feeling is probably those tabs still holding on. Take a look at the video I have linked that shows our installer removing the bin to install the harness. In some cases we've seen that installing a hitch like the Curt # C99FR on a 2021 Toyota Highlander with the handsfree liftgate will limit or possibly completely disable the handsfree opening feature. When it limits the feature you'll still have functionality when you kick at the sensors located away from the receiver opening, but as I mentioned there are cases where the hitch receiver completely disables the feature and you'll be limited to manually opening the rear hatch.

I can suggest two different options for you.
Option 1, you can discard (or save for a spare part) the 7-way included with the # 22119 kit and replace it with the # HM40975 which would plug directly into the harness provided by the # 22119. The # 30955 would also do the same thing, but the # HM40975 is much better built. In fact, it's what GM and Ford and Ram use as the OEM trailer connector on their trucks.

The Curt Class III Hitch, part # C45CR won't require drilling to be installed on a 2021 Toyota Highlander. The hitch fits all models of the 2021 Highlander, with the exception of the XSE model. For the XSE model, you'd use the # C99FR hitch. Be aware, that the hitch will fit models with an 18 inch or smaller spare tire under vehicle; larger spare tires will not be able to be stored under the vehicle.

Unfortunately, Toyota does not use the same color wire for the brake light switch on their vehicles. The best way to determine which wire is the correct wire is to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 and test for the wire that only gets hot when the brake pedal is pressed.

Using only one set of chains on your 2012 Toyota Highlander will not hurt the engine. Typically just one set is used as you really only need chains on the drive wheels. If your Highlander is a front wheel drive model, this is where they should be used. However, if you have an all wheel drive model, we do recommend using the chains on the rear wheels. This is due to chains not lasting as long when they are on front wheels as turning will add some stress on them and wear them out quicker.

Friction sway control units like the Curt part # 17200 don't really require any maintenance or have a shelf life that I could give. Since it's such a basic design and it's just friction between metal all you have to do is keep the correct tension in the kit. No lubrication is ever needed as that would defeat the system.
