Even though it doesn't have the tow package, the 2014 Ford Explorer will still have the rectangular connector located under the vehicle behind the passenger side rear wheel as shown in the linked install video for the Curt # C56278. On some vehicles, there are two identical connectors. If this is the case, use the black, not the gray connector.

The blue wire for the electric trailer brakes will not be at the rear of the vehicle. Even if you have the port for the brake controller, the blue wire for the electric brakes terminates somewhere between the port and the rear of the vehicle. Ford has done this on a lot of trucks as has Dodge. Ford might know, but we have always just explained how to hardwire a brake controller instead of playing hide and seek with that missing wire!

It sounds as if the connection you found is one that is located on the opposite side of the vehicle. If your 1998 model Explorer has the factory tow package installed the correct connector for the trailer wiring harness, # 118421, is sometimes on the drivers side or the passengers side.
