What I would do in your situation is cut off the square connector and install a 4-Pole Trailer End Connector # 18004 instead. This way the wiring harness # 118410 that you ordered will plug right in, and if you ever have to tow the trailer with a different vehicle it would work. That is an excellent point. Firestone was recently here for training and they did address the issues installers have had with the instructions. Basically they are going to be redesigning all the instructions. But for you, you can check for leaks at every other place that you can (without disassembling the vehicle). For reference the 225/65-17 tires are 28.5 inches diameter with a 8.9 inch width and 5.8 inch sidewall. This will depend on the hitch used and the height of the trailer coupler. You want the trailer to be as level as possible. We have a page on calculating hitch height and coupler height to help you find what ball mount would work best.

There should not be any wires that remain hot at all times at the 4 pole connector. If the taillight circuit is left on then the trailers taillight bulb would be on constantly but otherwise the lights should all go out when the taillights are off and the breaks and turn signals are not on.

It sounds like you have to much draw on the system, if you are not blowing fuses, for the car to handle the trailer lights with this wiring harness. The first thing I'd recommend you do is troubleshoot the wiring harness, I've linked you to an FAQ article that explains how to do this.
If you confirm that the trailer wiring harness is faulty, you'd want to remove it before installing the # 118410. It's theoretically possible to simply cut the wires and remove the old converter and splice in the new one.
