An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Timbren Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement Review

Today. We are taking a look at the Timbren Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement Kit for your Ford Transit. Before we dive in, let's see if the suspension enhancement system is gonna be a great option for your Ford Transit. Suspension upgrade Why Adding weight, more weight, and even more weight causes rear sagging, your headlights will point up, you will get worse handling and steering, less control and less comfort. With suspension enhancement added, your ride stabilizes, it levels out your vehicle, better control and steering, headlights straighten out, reduces road shock and have a safer ride in comfort. Check out the footage that we took underneath of your Transit.

We put about 250 pounds on a cargo carrier, and as you can see, the factory bounce stops don't even hit the axle. So it does feel pretty violent in the cab. Once we have the new bounce stops installed, you notice there's a lot smaller gap between our axle and the bottom of the bounce stop. It definitely helped a lot on the test scores, so the whole entire back suspension engaged much quicker. And also the biggest improvement I saw was when we took these big wide turns and really sharp turns at a higher speed.

I didn't feel the body of the vehicle roll near as much. The bracket on top is gonna be made of steel and it has a powder coated finished, so it's not gonna really rust away over time and the bounce stop is gonna be made of rubber. But it is a hollow rubber, so it's not just gonna completely stop your axle. It's also gonna flex, even with those heavier loads you may have. If we do have a really heavy load on here and it does hit the axle, it's gonna be a lot more heavy duty than the factory bounce stop that we removed earlier.

This is not gonna increase our Transit's capacity when we're hauling, it's just going to handle those heavier loads a little bit better. So the leveling capacity of this is gonna be 8,600 pounds. It goes in the same exact spot as our factory bounce stop. All you need is a socket, maybe an extension or two, a ratchet to tighten it down. It's a very quick and easy process, so let's show you how.

First you wanna chock your front wheels. Then we want to jack up the back of our vehicle. The goal here is to get the suspension on the rear axle to sag, so we have a little bit more room to work with. And then find a solid part on your frame to put your Jack stand. Let's remove the factory hardware. All we gotta do is just pull this out like this and undo this bolt. Take a 13 millimeter socket to loosen and remove this bolt. Here's our factory hardware. So there's two different options we have with our new system. One, we can just have the metal plate here and the main bounce stop with a smaller bolt. That's a little bit bigger than the factory set up. Or we can go ahead and use this extra spacer that's included with the longer bolt to make it a little bit taller. The goal here is we want at least a half an inch to a inch and a half a gap between the bottom of this and our axle. Some usual measurements to see which one's gonna be best. This one has a height of seven and a quarter inches. And this one without the spacer has a height of six and a quarter inches. What we're doing is not using the spacers. So we're using the smaller bolt and then you want the rounded part like this to be facing up towards your frame. You definitely want to use a short socket and it's gonna be a 17 millimeter. That's just going to make sure it's not gonna fall down into the socket too much, cause we do need to catch some of these threads. Lift it up into place, line it on up and thread it down. And then we can go ahead and tighten this down all the way once it's in place. Quick little tip, one, use a shallow socket, two, if the bolt kind of falls in, even if it's just a half inch, you are gonna want to put something in there just to keep that bolt pushed up in the outside of the socket right here. So the threads are gonna be able to touch the threads on the frame. Now repeat on the other side, we can take our jack's out and we can lower our Transit down and remove the chocks. Doesn't take a whole lot of time to enhance the suspension on your Ford Transit. And that's pretty much it for a look at the Timbren Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement Kit..

I am very pleased with these pillows, they are better than inflatable pillows and all my friends who have a Ford Transit, on my recommendation, bought and installed them on their cars and are very satisfied!

by:
2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata

Initial feels: Definitely made my Motorhome steering more responsive, did firm up the rear a bit. Make sure to check the size of the hex on the bolts I had 1-17mm and 1-16mm

by:

Good, very Good, no problems, better as air ride!

by:

We purchased these for our one ton Ford Transit, which was converted by Winnebago into an RV. The springs did stabilize our ride and take away most of the vehicle roll. However, they also made the ride more bumpy. It's a trade off if you're looking for a solution to your RV riding conditions.

by:
2017 Ford Transit T350

They definitely reduced sway and lean when driving. But also seems like you really feel every bump and increase road noise?
I assume since vibration from axle can now travel directly to frame?
Might need to upgrade shocks?
Might soften liitle over time?
Might need to get softer onesv
Only have gone 80 miles with them so far.
Will give it another few hundred miles and see what feel then.

Overall pretty happy So far.

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

Installation was a breeze, removed old bump stops installed Timbrens in about 30 minutes. Haven’t put a load on them yet so I’ll update later. Installed on a 2008 Silverado 2500HD..

by:

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

by:

very good product ,received just in time and fit perfectly on my GMC savana 2000 .Be sure to clean the two receptacle thats help.
très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

The timbrens actually did what they were suppose to do. However, once I starter driving out west I notice the timbrens were riding on the axle which cause the speedometer to jump around depending on the road. I would recommend them if you are hauling or towing a camper or RV. I was going to contact etrailer about maybe removing a spacer for one set however the other set came as one unit. The bottom line is the Timbrens does stabilize your load for safe travels. I will be contacting etrailer soon to assist in correcting the problem...Road trip from Idaho,Colorado,Wyoming, and Utah were beautiful... Thank you etrailer

by:

Definitely a must have when towing..stiff without a load but night and day difference while towing my travel trailer, better traction, steering and braking. Easy quick install..only issue I had was with the long bolts they sent with the spacer kit (optional for lift) the bolt diameter was too wide to fit through the holes on the bracket..but a trip to the local hardware store took care of that.

by:

Pros: Cheaper and easier to install than airbags, do the job when load is enough to compress the shock, with added weight or towing, then it stiffens the rear very nicely.
Cons: Doesn't do anything until there is 2-3cm of compressed shock. It sits above the contact point, doesn't touch. Under normal driving, there is no benefit/improved stiffness/anti sway in rear or a leveling of the factory rear sag in a 2022 or newer Toyota Tundra.
If had it to do over, would have put some kind of spacer in between product and upper included bracket, the supplied bolt is long enough to accommodate, to eliminate the gap, and lift the rear 1-2 cm. Should do it anyway, maybe when swapping to summer wheels next month.

by:

I’d seen similar products rated in the 4,000 lb ratings but I went with these. I’m not a mechanic but I removed the factory bump stops and installed both these in 30 minutes or less. I used my rolling jack and lifted from the drop hitch and easily removed the old ones and soapy water and 1/4 twist and these were on. Placed a block of wood in the space between these coils and lowered the jacks then pressed it with my tractor to confirm full engagement. I carry a lot of tools on a 2020 Chevy 2500 I do feel a bit of butt bounce on large bumps but other than that I’m very pleased.

The order with Will at etrailer was great. He was very helpful and knowledgeable, Installation was not easy but not too bad, The hardest part was removing the factory pieces I removed them from below which was a blind nut removal operation. This is on a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter motorhome. After removal of the factory pieces I discovered that access is much easier on top between the tire and the mud flap, I turned the front wheels inward and they didn't have to be removed. The front of the motorhome had to be raised quite a bit to get the Timbren piece jnserted. Also I learned to tighten the bolt and nut in the Timbren bumper as much as possible before installation because there is no access to the bolt head when tightening the top nut to keep the bolt from turning, preventing tightening the nut.

  • Best Timbren Kit for a 2019 Ford Transit T350 Motorhome Chassis
The best Timbren kit for your 2019 Ford Transit T350 motorhome chassis is part # TFRTR350 rated for 5,600 lbs. The other kit # TFRTR350HD you referenced is rated for 8,600 lbs and designed around vehicles with heavy-duty applications like a service vehicle. The standard kit will give you the best ride quality which is why I recommend going that route. If you were to use the heavier rated kit then the ride quality would be very harsh and you wouldn't enjoy driving your motorhome around.
