Rear Suspension Support

SumoSprings helper springs are great for pickup trucks. Towing or hauling a heavy load can cause sag as your factory suspension compresses under the weight of the load. This means that the rear axle is trying to support not only the extra load but also the truck's weight. And because there is less weight on your front axle, your front tires make less contact with the road, which causes problems with traction, steering, and braking. SumoSprings upgrade your factory suspension to level your vehicle, improve driving performance, and keep your ride comfortable.

SumoSprings Rebel installed showing separation of 2-piece springs

The innovative 2-piece design of these Rebel springs allows for unlimited suspension travel. This means that there will be more movement in your suspension when you're unloaded or off-roading, which makes your ride smoother and more comfortable.

Each spring has 2 pieces. One piece attaches to the frame of your vehicle. And the other piece attaches to the axle, typically above your existing factory leaf spring. The pieces come together to provide support when you are towing or hauling a heavy load. When you're unloaded, they separate so that they don't restrict the movement of your suspension. The closed-cell urethane springs also act like a shock absorber to dampen road vibration.

SumoSprings compressing under load

SumoSprings provide progressive load control - the more you load them, the stiffer they become. With a lighter load, the springs will compress easily for soft engagement and a less bumpy ride. The springs can also compress by as much as 80 percent to support a heavy rear load and to help your factory suspension bear up under the load. This evens out the weight, which levels your vehicle and ensures that your front tires are making better contact with the road. A level ride means that you have improved driving control, ensures safe headlight aim, and helps to minimize sway. The springs also support your factory suspension, which helps prevent sagging and reduces bottoming out.

The springs work independently from one another to support each side of your vehicle. This action helps to reduce body roll when you make a sharp turn. This also helps compensate for an off-center load.

Durable, Custom-Fit Springs

These microcellular urethane springs are tough. They resist abrasion, oil, salt, and UV rays that can more quickly wear out other springs, and they perform well in temperatures ranging from -25 F to 200 F (-33 C to 93 C).

SumoSprings expand and compress vertically with minimum expansion to the sides, so they won't be damaged by nearby mechanical parts, and they fit safely into tighter spots. And unlike air springs, SumoSprings require no maintenance or adjustment.

This kit comes with custom-fit brackets that are designed to easily bolt onto your vehicle.

Video Transcript for Review of SuperSprings Vehicle Suspension - Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement - SS29MR

Ellen: Hey, everybody. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com, and we're going to be taking a quick look at the SumoSprings Custom Helper Springs for the rear axle of your vehicle. Now, these are going to be a really great solution to alleviate a lot of issues that people have whenever they're towing anything heavy with their vehicle, putting maybe a trailer on the back of your truck, a fifth wheel, or pulling a camper behind with a hitch ball. What these are going to do is they're going to help to support your suspension. They're going to give you some better handling overall, and they come in two parts. So unlike airbags that are going to do similar things, these aren't going to hamper the travel of your suspension. That can be kind of one of the drawbacks to getting an air suspension or airbags in your vehicle.

Not only that, but they also require a lot of maintenance to keep them up. So these are pretty much maintenance free. Once you put them in your truck, you don't have to ever worry about them again. They're just there. They do their job.

But what they will do is they have a progressive compression. So the more weight you put on them, the stiffer they get to push back against that. So it kind of dials it in for your load. So you don't have to worry about it being too stiff. If you're just going down the road and hitting a normal pothole or anything like that and not towing, it shouldn't be a really stiff or fast engaging type of feel. This also makes it easier for whenever you're getting any kind of maintenance done on your vehicle.

So that's another drawback to airbags is that sometimes if you are getting maintenance done, your suspension needs to hang and that can actually damage the bags. So you don't have to worry with this. They already come separate on their own. So they're a really easy way to alleviate a lot of issues with body roll or rough ride on your vehicle while you're trying to tow.So let's look at them a little closer and talk about what comes in the kit. You're going to get a spring for either side.

And, again, this is for the rear axle of your vehicle. There'll be an axle strap that's going to go around that and then the hardware to get everything installed. So there's no cutting or drilling required with this. It just goes right in place and should be a pretty easy install. Might take a little bit of time to just kind of get in to the spot and get everything in place where it needs to go.The springs themselves are made out of a micro cellular urethane. So that's really durable. It's able to withstand any kind of damage from oils road salts, UV rays, it really doesn't cause any issues with these guys. They're able to work from extreme temperatures of negative 25 degrees Fahrenheit up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. So it really doesn't matter where you're using these, they should be up to the task for that. Also, something that's nice about these is that there's not a lot of lateral expansion, so they're not going to pancake out. They should stay relatively compact. So even as things are pushing down on them, they're not going to cause any issues with your existing suspension or with your wheels and rub on anything. There's also, again, no worries about any kind of maintenance. You don't have to run any air tubes to these and worry about those. So even if you're going to be going off road with these, you can rest assured that they're not going to hamper how far your suspension can travel. Just going to be these two pieces that bolt on, kind of as a replacement for your jounce bumpers, so they are a jounce style spring, and they are made in the USA. This is a fit for the 2011 through the 2016 Ford F 250 and F 350 Super Duty and for the 2014 through '16, that's for the two-wheel drive. Now, if you want to get a kit for these, that would be matching for the front, you can also find that here at etrailer.com. That would be one that would fit those same year models as well. So that'll kind of alleviate some of the other issues that you might be having. The weight capacity that these can take at 50% compression is 3,000 pounds. That does not increase your overall weight carrying capacity, so keep that in mind. It doesn't increase your payload or anything in your vehicle. So you always want to go off of the manufacturer's recommended weight and never exceed that. They are covered by a limited lifetime warranty. And that's really about all there is to it for our look at the SumoSprings Rebel Helper Springs. I hope this video has been helpful in deciding if this is the right solution for you. We do have a lot of other accessories here for towing and all kinds of stuff. So check it out. Thanks for watching.

Front and rear Sumo Springs installed. Have not had a chance to hit the highway as yet. Locally a very good ride. Thanks to Joanne K. for all of her help.

by:

I put a small leveling kit in my 2500hd Silverado. I noticed afterwards towing my excavator or dump trailer I was getting some rear sag when I had my trailers loaded heavy. I considered doing air bags for the rear. Instead I installed the sumo springs. I installed them in about an hour. Very happy with them. No noticeable difference in ride quality while empty. And they keep my truck level when I’m hauling my trailers. 5 stars!

by:

they were a great investment for our motorhome. Swaying now is very little and it has to be very windy for me to notice. I will never own another motorhome without sumo springs. I have a forest river fr3 30ds 2021. Easy to install yourself.

by:

The front Sumo Springs made a major difference in the stability of my Winnebago motorhome. It handles the bumps much better without major jarring of the passengers and dampens the side to side motion in turns and under crosswinds.

by:

We have a 2009 build F53 chassis on our 2010 Windsport 32A. I ordered these Sumo springs for the front axle. Hated how bad our coach dashboard would shake and rattle when going over bridge transitions, potholes, and concrete roadway section breaks. Took about an hour and were easy to install alone. Couldn't believe how much these helped the front axle. Worked so well I recently bought a set for the rear axle also. Those are a bit harder to install due to having to drill holes in frame rails to mount the upper bracket and glad I had friend to assist me. Would have only taken a little longer without the help but still easy to do by basic mechanic skills. With having both now we can certainly tell the difference and wished I had bought them sooner.

by:

Sumo springs along with a steering stabizer, new shocks, and oversized sway bars seriously tightens the ride on older model RV with an f53 ford chasis. Long hauls become a lot less strenuous. I also put a memory foam and high density foam seat cushion on the driver's seat. We can travel all over with a lot less fatigue from fighting the wheel and pucker factor from blowing around the road. I took about 3 hours to unstall all 4 sumo springs.

by:

Love these. Were easy to install and work great. No complaints. Maintains ride height even with 10,000lbs on the trailer. “F-250 with gooseneck” for reference.

by:

The Sumo mount had to be slightly modified on the drivers side (removed a 1/2" by 1/2" chunk of the plate) with a grinder to get it to fit on my 2022 f350 4x4. I contacted the manufacturer prior to making the modification. They did not have an issue. The Sumo reduced truck squat (approx 3/4") allowing the truck to ride level with a trailer (8k hitch mount and 17k gooseneck). When you hit a pothole, the impact felt in the truck was jarring and caused the truck to become unstable. The Sumo eliminated this problem. I chose the blue over the yellow after watching a video on etrailer about ride comfort. I added front Sumos after I installed the rear Sumos. The rear provided the a more noticeable improvement. I chose Sumos over air bags because they eliminated air leak maintenance and air pressure adjustments depending on the load.

by:

These helper springs made an amazing difference in the stability and ride comfort in our coach. Improved cornering and bounce control were immediately apparent. Plus, crosswind driving is much improved. The split design makes leveling easy as I typically raise the front of the coach rather than the rear. Installation is a lot of work, but can be done yourself with the right equipment. Very pleased.

by:

The work great! Was going to go with the Air-Ride air bags in the front but folks had noted that the bags are strained when the leveling pulls the front wheels up to the point of coming off the ground. Glad we went with these. The person I put this on for is Handicap (or Handicapable as she says!) and these do not require air or making sure the pressure(s) are correct and holding.
It was a pain in the butttt get the original jounce bumper off the drivers side, but we muscled through it!! Thanks, Amy, for your help in ordering!! v

by:

I installed the Sumo Springs prior to a 7500 mile trip on my 22GMC 2500. We was pulling our 34 foot Travel trailer and I believe the springs made all the difference in ride stability as well as control while pulling.

by:

Ordered the sumo springs on a Thursday and received them on a Thursday used the on line video they have had had them installed in no time this isn’t the only product I have gotten from them and will continue to use them great service

by:

Bought these for my 3/4 ton. Oh my god, roughest ride . Removed these springs and replaced with air bags.

by:

Game changer! The factory should be required to install these on every motorhome. From white knuckle carsick swaying and wandering to a one finger smooth ride. Highly recommend!

by:

Just Installed my Sumo Rear Springs. They went in real easy on my Dodge Ram 3500. The thing that took the most time on the install was jacking up the frame 3-4" to make enough space between the axle base and top of frame to slip in the entire lower and top sections of the Sumo Springs. Once I did that, I narrowed that space by letting the frame down a little but not all the way. Just enough to catch the receiving spring and leaving a half inch gap between the two sections. This allowed me to easily rachet the bottom u-clap without a problem and keep good alighment. I know I'm going to love this product once I hitch up. No more 2' drop in the rear end once hooking up to my 15k 5th wheel. These springs are stout but no so stout I'll beat the hell out of my body when hunting the rutted roads of the great North West. Thank you Jessie for your expertise and steering me toward the perfect application to meet my pulling and off-road needs.

by:

I think they helped with the side to side roll I put on front and back sumo’s the roadmaster sway bar and front safety steer. Drove from Michigan to Utah . I think the ford f-53 is not a great place to start

by:

My THOR motor coach has the Ford F-53 chassis. I rides like a truck. That should not be surprising as "it is a truck." I purchased and installed these Sumo Springs and even though it will never be "air bag" suspension, the Sumo Spring made a wonderful difference in improving the ride. I would recommend this add on to everyone and as I meet similar motor coaches on the road, I show them the Sumo Springs and I do recommend them.

by:

Preston did a great job helping me spec in the correct springs for my 2016 Thor Hurricane 27K on a F53 chassis. Placed order with him over phone and received springs two day's later. I just installed them and took Motor home on a test drive around town on bumpy streets and what a difference it made. Drives more like a truck now and less like a boat. I also installed a steering stabilizer spring and did the cheap handling fix to the sway bars. Well worth the time and effort. I did notice that the etralier installation video shows the bottom brackets of the spring installed with the "U" down which is opposite the mfg's printed instructions. I did mine according to the printed instructions cause it seemed to make more sense. Probably no big deal either way.
Thanks etrailer. I'll be contacting you guys when ready to do the back end of my motor home.

by:

If you are looking at these, betting you have a class A that you are attempting to get the smoothest ride out of. We installed these on a V8 F53 24k chassis - Georgetown G7 for the same reasons. Most forums and reviews speak of multiple components being installed all at once, with varying results on ride quality. Being an aircraft mechanic of 20yrs, I elected to install one component at a time before throwing the store at it. Started with the Koni Evo shocks. Really helped smooth the ride and lessen the low speed rolls. So much, we almost stopped there. After reading many rv’ers speak to front and rear Sumos being too stiff of a ride, I elected to only install fronts. The fronts are two piece bags unlike the rear, which means the only dampen on compression, not extension/compression at same time. My theory was correct! For us, this is the perfect combination at minimal cost! I highly suggest you start with this setup prior to buying the store!

by:

A friend and I installed these, if was not difficult to figure out and was a big savings. My wife noticed the difference without knowing it. On a trip to a frequent location she would complain the entire trip after installation on the same trip she did not complain at all. Success!

by:

The installation went very well. The ride seemed smooth.

by:

Made the ride better on my Fleetwood St orm.

by:

I like the Sumo Srings on my Ram thirty five hundred thinking about a pair for my fifth wheel trailer.

by:

Was a quality product install was fairly easy and seems to do what they claim

by:

They helped alot on our motorhome.

  • Recommended Helper Spring System for Gooseneck Hitch Equipped 2014 Ford F250
Your best helper spring option will depend on what all you use your truck for. If the primary use is towing a 5th wheel, I'd honestly go with something like the SumoSprings # SSR-139-40-2 for 4WD trucks or # SS29MR for 2WD trucks. The SumoSprings product offers 3000 lbs of additional support and is ideal for gooseneck or 5th wheel towing situations where the weight applied to the rear suspension doesn't vary much. The SumoSprings won't affect your ride quality until a load applied to...
