Video Transcript for Tekonsha Wiring - Trailer Connectors - 119177 Review

Today we're going to review part #119177. This is the Tow Ready ModuLite heavy duty protector with the 5-way flat connector and an integrated circuit and overload protection. This part will provide the 5-way flat trailer connector at the back of your tow vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. Also on a standard 5-way connector it also is designed to provide the backup light or surge brake lockout circuit. The blue wire right here is designed to override your surge coupler for backing up. This will also work with your standard 4-way flat connector.

This is designed to work with a 2 or a 3 wire light system. Basically a 2 wire system has the same bulb for stop and turn signals. The 3 wire will have separate bulbs for the stop and turn signals. This part will work with either LED or incandescent bulbs on both the vehicle and the trailer. This is rated for up to 4.2 amps for the turn and stop circuit, 7.5 amps for the taillight circuit, and the 4.2 amps for the backup circuit. On the inside of this ModuLite it has an integrated re-settable short circuit and overload protection and the trailer brakes will override the hazard lamps when the brake is activated.

This is designed not to send feedback through the vehicle circuit. Does use upgraded circuitry to work with the vehicles that use the PWM or the pulse width modulation system. This gives the trailer lights full brightness. This will draw full power directly from the tow vehicle battery. This black wire right here will connect to your battery of your tow vehicle, and when it's connected it uses less than 5 mA of the vehicles circuit. This part does include everything shown here.

Has a nice set of detailed instructions that tell you how to make your connections and even pictures of where your connections are made. Comes with this 5-way dust cap that goes over the 5-way connector. Comes with a piece of double-sided tape for connecting your ModuLite down to keep it from moving around, 5 wire connectors for connecting your wires to your tow vehicle, a grounding screw if needed, and a fuse because when you connect to your battery you want to make sure you put an in-line fuse before you connect it. Also we do sell, if you want, because when you run your power wire to your battery you're going to need wire to go up to the front in your in-line fuse holder. We do sell an optional install kit which is part #118151. We sell that separately and it's listed on this product page as a related product.

That makes the installation a lot easier because it'll include all the wires and connectors and the in-line fuse holders that you need. Just real quickly, to show you how this would install is you'll mount this to the back of your vehicle with the double-sided tape. The bonded wire right here that the 5-way is connected to would be made to run out the back of the vehicle and plug into your trailer. When it's not being used you can just store it in the back. Take your 5-way or the dust cover and that'll just attach to the 5-way itself. Just stretch it on like that and then when you're not connected to the trailer you can just put your dust cap over the 5-way and that'll protect those terminals from any damage or from the elements. When you go to make your connections, what you'll want to do is the wires right here connecting to your tow vehicle, the green wire, the extra length of wire is what's for the passenger side, so you'll run this all the way over to the passenger side. Use a wire connector, tap this into your passenger side right turn signal. The yellow wire is for the drivers side left turn signal. Again using a wire connector you'll tap into the drivers side turn signal. The brown wire is for your taillight connection. Again you'll tap this into the taillight connection. The red wire is for the, if it's on a 3 wire system and it'll say right here on here, it's a 3 wire system it'll attach to the stop light circuit. If it's only on a 2 wire system, you just have to ground this red wire. Then your remaining wires here, the white wire with the islet on it is connected to a good clean ground. If you can't find one they include a grounding screw that you can drill a hole and make a good clean ground. Again the blue wire we had mentioned earlier, this is what is designed to attach to override your surge coupler for backing up or if you're just using it for reverse light circuit connect it to that. The remaining wire with the butt connector on it is for the power wire. Again you'll run this all the way to the front. You'll use a length of wire, run this to the battery, run it through an in-line fuse holder and that'll supply the power to the ModuLite. That should do it for the review on part #119177. This is the Tow Ready ModuLite heavy duty protector with the 5-way flat connector and integrated circuit and overload protection. .

One year review - I installed this on a 2017 Armada. The install while straight forward did require removing some interior panels to access wiring. I have about 15,000 miles of towing a travel trailer on this device and it has worked perfectly.

by:

After another store botched my SUV wiring installation leading to a short circuit and a need to rewire, I found this item for a great price. I wired it myself. It was simple and has worked perfectly with my LED lights and new trailer wiring. Very happy.

by:

Their customer service is even better than [online]. And I like [online]. With these type of trailer parts it really helps to have the etrailer technical support before and after purchase. [online] doesn’t offer that. Thanks etrailer.

by:

Still working perfectly, with zero issues to date.
