BAKFlip F1 Tonneau Cover Operation Animation

The BAKFlip F1 tonneau cover delivers top-of-the-line truck bed protection and a tough, stylish look. This heavy-duty, tri-fold cover keeps your truck bed and cargo dry, cuts down on wind drag to improve your fuel mileage, and allows for full truck bed access without having to be removed. And because this tonneau mounts inside of your truck bed side rails, you get a low-profile look and you can still use your stake pockets to mount accessories.

Convenient Folding Design

BAKFlip F1 Tonneau Cover Folded Up

One of the BAKFlip F1's most attractive features is that it can be folded all the way up and remain securely positioned on your truck while you are driving, even at highway speeds. This means that you can haul large cargo without having to completely remove the tonneau. Simply unlatch each of the panels, fold them one on top of the other, and flip them back so that they sit upright against the cab of your truck.

BAKFlip F1 Tonneau Cover Tonneau Cover Prop Rod

Then flip up the prop rods that are attached to the tonneau's frame rails, slide the brackets on the cover down over the rods, and tighten the knobs on the brackets to secure the upright cover in place. Rubber bumpers on the cover prevent it from marking your cab or scratching the glass of your rear windshield. When the tonneau is in this position, your vehicle's third brake light will remain visible.

If you want to maintain visibility out of your rear window, you can secure the folded panels of the cover without propping them up against the cab using the tie-down straps and buckles included with the cover. Just fold up the first 2 panels of the cover, leaving the panel closest to the cab latched in place. Make sure both buckle clips are inserted into the buckle ends on the front header panel of the cover and adjust the straps to ensure the cover is secure.

Simple, One-Person Operation

BAKFlip F1 Tonneau Cover Panel Latches

The F1 is easy to operate. To unlatch the rear panel, drop your tailgate and pull either of the 2 release cords located along the bottom corners of the panel's housing. Either cord will release both of the integrated latches so that you can lift up the panel. To unlatch the second and third panels, pull the easy-to-reach release cords built into the corners of those panels. As a safety measure and to help you get to your gear in the dark, the F1 includes emergency release handles on both sides of your truck bed that glow in the dark.

To close the cover, simply fold the panels back down. Each panel will securely latch back into place under its own weight. When your tailgate is closed and locked, no one will be able to get in to open the cover, thus safeguarding your truck bed and its contents. The fiberglass-reinforced polymer construction will also prevent anyone from peeling the cover up at the sides or cutting through its center, ensuring additional security.

Heavy-Duty Construction

The BAKFlip F1's rugged construction makes it a great match for your truck, no matter what you do while at work or play. It's strong enough to hold up to 400 lbs of evenly distributed weight when it's folded down, so it can support your weight if you sit or stand on it.

BAKFlip F1 Tonneau Cover Close Up

Each 5/8" thick, fiberglass-reinforced polymer panel has a sturdy aluminum base with an insulated core that is made of top-quality, closed-cell foam to create a strong, heavy-duty cover. The polymer construction also ensures that the F1 stays cooler than an all-aluminum tonneau. The black powder coat finish with hair cell texture on top of the panels offers superior resistance to dents, dings, and harsh UV rays.

The frame rails are constructed of aircraft-grade, rustproof aluminum and have a sleek black, corrosion-resistant powder coat finish. And scuff-resistant, semigloss black rubber seals run all the way around the cover to help to keep water out of your bed. If any water does seep through, it will run along the gutter system that is built into the frame rails and will then exit through drain hoses that install behind your cab.

BAKFlip F1 Tonneau Cover Latch Housing

Glass-filled nylon latches in heavy-duty, injection-molded housings add to the F1's rugged design and ensure long-lasting, efficient operation. Flush hinges prevent ice and water from building up on the cover.

Easy, No-Drill Installation

BAKFlip F1 Tonneau Cover Installation

Installing the F1 is simple. All you need is a wrench, and you don't have to do any drilling. The tonneau's frame rails clamp to the inside of your truck bed side rails to create a base for the cover. The included bolts secure the front hinge rail to the frame rails at the cab. Slotted brackets on the hinge rail allow the bolts to shift in case you need to adjust the cover to achieve a snug fit.

Video Transcript for BAKFlip F1 Hard Tonneau Cover Installation - 2022 Ford F-150

Hi everyone, Aiden here with etrailer.com. Today, we're taking a look at and showing you how to install this BAKFlip F1 hard tonneau cover on our 2022 Ford F-150. Now, for me, I really like the hard tonneau covers a bit better because I think they're a bit more functional. They've got the added layer of security, because a soft tonneau cover, anyone can come up and cut it open and get inside your bed. This one, it's going to be 5/8 of an inch thick, have aluminum underneath, so you've got that solid metal to keep people out. And then this fiberglass top, that's actually gonna stay a bit cooler than aluminum when it's out in the heat and just give you better protection for your truck.

The other thing with this is that you can take these through car washes, and with soft tonneau covers, you're really not meant to do that. No matter if it's a hand wash or a jet style, it can damage the tonneau cover, so it's just not recommended, and these are gonna be more durable. As far as the actual style of the tonneau cover, this one's going to be a trifold design. And what that means is you've got this folding up in three panels. So, you've got our first one there.

We'll pull on the cord to release the second one. And then we can pull on another cord to release our third panel here. And this way, it'll fold up against the back window, which does block your view, but that leaves the entire bed completely open for cargo. Comparing this to the canister-style hard tonneau covers, those will roll up into a canister that sits in the bed, so you are sacrificing some of that bed space here. And especially for our truck today with a short bed, we need all the space we can get, so this design is actually really nice in that application.

When it's like this, you've got built-in prop rods that you can pull out and secure down. Loosening this hand knob, dropping the plate down and tightening the hand knob, and that will secure it and keep it from flying back. You've got one on either side. You wanna make sure you secure both when you're driving. The other thing to consider, if I get this undone, is we can always have this partially open too.

So, if I wanna have this first panel locked down, I do have buckles integrated on either side that I can buckle into the front and keep this from folding out. Again, secure each buckle on either side to do that. And then there's storage buckles right there so that when it is folded out, these straps don't just dangle into the bed. At this point here, you've got the bulk of the cover folded out, so there's nothing to secure at this point. And then you've got it folded out flat like that. And we can close up the tailgate for full coverage and full security. One potential point of concern could be the fact that if this is leaning on the back glass, is that gonna cause damage over time And with the install, you are are gonna install these foam pads to make sure that there isn't any hard contact on your window or your cab, so there is some protection there. Again, not my favorite because it does rest on that glass and it does block the window, but that is the trade off you make for this full bed access right here. There are also integrated drain tubes up in the top corner. These are pretty out of the way in our install here because we've got some factory holes pretty much right next to them, so you don't see them. And that's gonna make sure any water that collects on the rails here will drain out and not go into the truck bed. Those drain tubes are right next to these hand knobs which are actually really handy because you can fully undo them and lift the whole trifold cover out, leaving just the rails behind. So, if you want full bed access without blocking your window, you can remove this whole thing pretty much in an instant, with a second set of hands probably to help you lift it out, but it's gonna be really quick and easy to do, especially compared to those canister-style covers that aren't really meant to be removed. All around the cover, we have a pretty solid weather seal, so when it is fully closed, there shouldn't really be much water intrusion. And again, if there is, we've got those drain tubes in the bed, so none of it gets in. And then the other thing about this is it's super low profile. It sticks up less than an inch above your bed rails here, so it gives a very clean look to the truck. And when it's all folded out like this, I really enjoy the look. So, for me, the big comparison with this comes between the trifold design and the canister design. We've touched on that a bit throughout the install and it really just comes down to how much bed access do you need. Do you have a short bed like this where you need every inch you can get Then maybe go with something like this where you can easily remove it or fully fold it up. If you've got a long bed or just don't often find yourself filling the bed of your truck to the max, then maybe go with the canister-style. It's gonna be a bit cleaner, not having anything up against the back glass there, but it's really just depending on what you're looking for. Either way you go, they're gonna be a nice, secure option and help with that fuel economy on your truck and give it a clean look. The other thing to consider is the install process. Comparing this to some of the Retrax canister-style that I've installed, this is actually a lot quicker and I found it a lot simpler to do on my own. So, check out that process now. The first thing you wanna do, if you don't have a drop-in liner for your bed and you've just got the bare metal like we do here, or even a spray-in liner, you want to apply the weather seal at the front here. The first thing we wanna do though is make sure it's clean, so I'm just gonna spray it down some soapy water and wipe the area down to make sure we get good adhesion with the adhesive. And with the clean surface, we'll just slowly apply that weather seal, just kind of towards the middle right here and trying to keep it even as we go the length of the bulkhead. And you'll probably need to trim off some excess at the end, so just make sure you've got a pair of scissors or side cutters handy for when you get there. The next thing is gonna be our side rails. You can tell which one is which by looking for the support arm, that'll be towards the inside of the bed. And we want this silver bracket up here to be towards the cab of the truck. So, that'll help us figure out the correct orientation. And what you wanna do is set this onto the bed rail of your truck and push it as far forward as it'll go. It'll probably help to have a second set of hands here, but because we've got the short bed today, it's actually pretty manageable on your own. You'll take one of your clamps and just open it up a little bit by loosening that nut on the other side. That'll face towards in the bed. And we'll just go ahead and push this up into place as high as it'll go between the rails of our tonneau cover and the bed rails of the truck to secure it. So, I've got a friend holding the rail right now and I'm just gonna push this up into place as high as it'll go, and make sure that the teeth on the clamp are engaging with the teeth on the tonneau cover rail and the other portion of the clamp is clamping onto the actual truck itself. Let's push the rail forward as far as it'll go here. And then I'm gonna grab my 14-millimeter wrench and begin to tighten this down enough that it will just stay in place on its own. We don't need to fully torque it down quite yet. We'll repeat that process for our middle and rear clamps, making sure to put a little bit of downward pressure on the actual rail, just to make sure everything's sitting level. We can always come back later and check on it and make sure everything is sitting level. And there's no exact placement for the clamps. Just about that six to eight-inch spacing at the front one, same with the back, six to eight-inch spacing and then roughly in the middle for the middle one. Once all the clamps are in, I always like to come to the end and just make sure everything looks level and definitely, it looks good here, so I'm gonna go back through and just fully tighten down all the clamps. No need to over torque them or anything, just enough that there snug. At this point, you wanna grab a second set of hands and lift the cover into place and just set it on top of the rails. We're gonna go towards the cab, but not quite all the way there. And then you should be able to flip this open, slide it forward if need be. And then there's a smaller flap right up front that will line up with some screw holes at the front. And then we can just set this flap down in place and we'll move on. These two holes in the front will line up with our buckle end right there. I've got a pad on the bottom that just stuck on with some adhesive. And then I'm gonna actually flip this end up a bit to feed in these female ends for our screws up through the bottom. They won't poke out the other end, but you can hold them in place. They'll also hold themselves a fair bit. Line this up over top and drop down our Phillips-head screws to thread into those other ends underneath. And we'll repeat this process on both sides. Near our buckle, we've got another hole. And we're gonna have these larger bolts and some rubber rings. We'll drop one of our rubber rings over that larger bolt and just poke it down through that hole, making sure that it's aligned with the silver slotted bracket that we saw on the rails when we first installed them. You can see the threads, poking out the other side and you can see that slotted bracket. We'll go underneath in just a second, but I can watch it pass through as I fold it down. And we also wanna make sure that our weather seal is aligning properly with that foam seal we installed earlier, which it is. So, now we'll go actually underneath and secure those bolts. And it'll probably be hard to see, but with those threads, we wanna add one of those rubber rings and metal flat washer, a lock washer and then our hand knob. So, I'm just gonna get those up into place. Thread on that hand knob underneath and secure that on both sides to secure the cover down to the rails. And once that's secure, we can unfold the cover and test the fitment here, making sure that as we do each panel, everything's sitting squarely in between the rails. And right now, it's looking really good. Then we've got this last panel right here. It may be sticking to itself a little bit when you first get it out of the package, so just go to each edge and get that pulled up if need be. And it looks like our final piece is sitting pretty good. It may need a little bit of adjustment. And if it does, just go to those hand knobs, loosen them up and adjust it so that everything's running parallel and square and then you should be all good. Then we wanna install these bumpers on our cover where it will make contact with the cab. So, I've got it mostly folded up right here. But if we wanna get it to where we get pretty much full bed access, you'll see that at a certain point, it will make contact with our back glass right here. We've got three of these pads that we can install. And you can put them wherever you need to to make sure that you don't make contact with your vehicle, or if it does, it's all padded and secured. So, I'm gonna get these installed towards the middle here because the edges on our truck are fine and we can carry on. The last steps are drain tubes. We've got points up at the rails that we can attach these to and then find the place to run them out of your truck bed. Every truck's gonna be a little bit different. We've got these plastic caps at the bottom. My shoe might be blocking that. But if we wanted to, we could take that off or drill a hole, or we've even got this point up here. It's gonna be a pretty tight bend, but it is going to work as a drain point, so I'm gonna go there so I don't have to drill anything out. Just run the tube out and then attach the other end to that point on our rails. I will say, this tube is a little difficult to actually get in place well, so you might have to mess with it for a little bit. And once you've got it all the way on, you can just run the rest of it out. You can see, we don't have any low points in here. All the water will just run out and down that tube. And then with everything in place, I always like to do a second test to make sure everything's sitting where we want it to. We can undo the stops, I already got the other side done, and fold each piece out. And make sure, if you do have the buckles buckled, to unbuckle them. And then we can close our tailgate to ensure everything's fitting properly and we have a good seal at the tailgate as well as all around the rest of the truck, and we do. So, I'd say, that'll complete our installation at this BAKFlip tonneau cover on our 2022 Ford F-150. Thanks for watching..

Quality addition to my truck-only bad part is the endcaps on each section. They have a habit of popping out of the channel which keeps it open in that section if you don't notice it right away, which allows water to get in as well as catch wind when on expressway. I use gaffers tape to try to mitigate but it does need to be redone on occasion. If this wasn't an issue I would have offered up 5 stars!

by:

Just got it installed. The installation was easy and straight forward. Sits flush to the bed and looks great.

by:

I found the Back Flip cover a well-engineered cover. The cover works very well and with a some adjustment it can be waterproof.
The only issues I have had are the back flip knobs fall off and I have to replace one. The other is the interior panels dent very easily from cargo hitting it. I was planning on putting thin diamond plate panels to help prevent anymore damage.

by:

I bought this cover because I have an F1 on my other truck and it has been a good cover. The F1 gets hot but not so hot you can't touch it in the summer. It does a great job of keeping out the weather and thieves. I have just finished installing it on my 2019 Ram 3500 long bed. The factory rails were out of spec by 3/16" so I had to trim them to fit. That is why I only rated it at 4 stars otherwise a very nice bed cover. I have had my other F1 for 7 years and it is still holding up well so I expect similar performance from this one. Being a long bed does make the panels a little more difficult to fold but it is still pretty easy.

by:

As my name suggests I carry boxes in the back of my truck on a regular basis, and they arrive dry every time.
Also, while pulling my Fifth-wheel it folds out of the way.

by:

Love this cover. Works to haul anything I could without a cover. The fact I can configure it to haul and secure just about anything that I can get in the box. I’ll never have a different cover on a pickup.

by:

Bed Rug is a great product overall. Installation is straightforward and easy. I do recommend the use of denatured alcohol after scuffing the spray-in bedliner, to promote the best adhesion. You can purchase a quart at any big box home improvement store. Caution: This product is highly volatile, so be sure to use in an outdoor space and wear the minimum of chemical protective gloves and eye protection. Also, avoid inhaling the fumes! The only reason I gave this product 4 stars is that it doesn’t quite fit very well on the rear sides of the pickup box, where the Canyon has multiple “ribs” near the tailgate. Other than that, it looks great and is a real treat to sit on, particularly when I installed the Bak Flip F1 bedcover.

by:

It is a horrible cover, it leaks, it is way to heavy, parts already starting to fail.

by:

Easy to install, largely but not completely weatherproof. The cover has been installed for a year on a truck that sits outside with no fading or deterioration evident. It could do with a couple more rivets that hold the wire to the release mechanism near the tailgate as the plastic tubing occasionally pops out of the track that holds it in. It is easy to pop back into place though.

by:

Great cover, easy to use. The only issue is that some water will leak into the bed especially near the corners.

by:

2022 2500HD long bed. I’ve had several different bed covers on tricks in the past. The is the first time I coughed up the $$$ for a BAKFlip and it’s worth the money. My only complaint is that it is nowhere near water proof and when it rains the contents of your bed will get wet.

by:

I like that your able to fold the cover to completely utilize the bed,
I don’t like that the plugs on both sides on each section where the cover hinges continuously keep coming out.
I would look at other covers before I would buy this one again.

by:

Love it. Just wish there was a tie down for when you just have 2 folds open.

by:

This product fits my needs perfectly. When towing my 5th wheel I leave 2 panels down and still have a partially protected bed.

by:

Great quality. Easy Install.

by:

It would be a great cover if it didn’t leak. I have to be very mindful of what I put in the bed so it doesn’t get damaged by water.

by:

I really like this cover, it has four panels that fold back and you can secure. Whenever I am towing my 5th wheel it folds back to the first panel. That provides coverage for my tool box, generator and other items that I don't want to be exposed while traveling. It was easy to install, it locks and it dresses up the bed of my truck. I definately recommend this cover and esp to those that pull a trailer.

by:

Excellent product. Purchased for my 2018 F350 Dually to cover my 5th wheel hitch and tool box when not pulling the trailer. Self install. No issues in 12 months of usage. Recommend this cover.

by:

I have been very impressed with this cover. It protects things inside from the weather whether rain or sun or cold. It also allows my dirt bike to be transported with out removal.
I loaned my truck to a buddy to haul two dirt bikes and some how he broke the hold up bars bracket to the bed for full use position, but that is not the fault of the BAK72207.

Highly recommend this bed cover if you live in hot or cold areas or transport quads or dirt bikes.

by:

My entire experience with etrailer.com was excellent. I spent numerous hours researching the hitch and tonneau cover set up I wanted for my 2014 Ford F250. The majority of my time was on the etrailer.com website reviewing Q&A, installation guidance and videos, and expert advise. I chose the Reese Elite Series 5th wheel hitch and the BakFlip F1 tonneau cover. Both products arrived within 10 business days. Installation was as easy and straightforward as expected. The BakFlip F1 really dresses up my F250 and the BakFlip technology makes it very easy to use and gives me full access to my truck bed as needed. The Reese hitch has performed flawlessly.

by:

This is one of those components you get what you pay for and I couldn’t be happier. Fits perfect, looks every bit as great as shown in all the pictures. My brand of 5th wheel hitch fits below it.
*** 1 Issue - The installation instructions have room for improvement, having poor illustrations and reads difficult. The installation of this product is extremely easy but the instructions make it sound difficult.

by:

If you want a cover that is secure and leaks this one is perfect. If it rains you are guaranteed to get your belongings soaking wet.

by:

Easy to install, looks good, keeps items in the bed out of sight.

by:

The Bak Flip F-1 has proven to be an excellent cover for my 2020 GMC 2500HD. It was easy to install with a friends help. It is a good looking cover and has been waterproof. It is very secure with the gate locked. Very pleased.

by:

No issues, easy to install, folds up nicely when I need the bed space, no water/rain leaking. It’s nice to conceal/protect cargo
