Confirming Your Fit

If you know your tire size, you may think you won't need to test fit your new chains. But there are a lot of variables that can affect whether chains will fit your specific tires, including your tire type, the amount of air pressure in the tire, the amount of tread wear, and the tire manufacturer. You'll also need to know how much clearance is in your wheel well, which you can determine by measuring from your tire tread to the sidewall of the wheel well.

We recommend that you order chains as early in the season as possible to give yourself plenty of time to test fit the chains and reorder if needed. This way, you won't be stuck out in the cold later with snow chains that don't fit.

You can test fit these chains in your garage or driveway, but you'll want to wait until there's snow on the ground to actually drive with them. Likewise, if you're out in the snow and come across bare pavement, you'll want to pull over and remove the chains. Even low-profile chains can cause damage to the bare pavement, your garage floor, or your vehicle if they break from the wear of riding on a harsh surface.

Installing Snow Chains

Installing these chains is simple.

Lay chains on the ground to get all the tangles out

1. Lay out the chains on the ground to make sure there are no twists or kinks in them.

Drape chains over tire.

2. Drape the chains over the tire.

Connect the chain behind the tire

3. On the back of the tire, pull the chain tight and hook the ends together. Repeat this on the side chain on the front of the tire, then clamp the lever to fasten extra chain links and keep them from flapping as you drive.

Tension cams

4. Insert the included tool into the cam and twist to tighten the sidewall chain. Twist as many cams as it takes to get a tight fit.

Attach optional tensioners

5. Drive forward and recheck tension. Tighten any loose cams.

Rubber adjusters (sold separately) can be used to help give you a tight fit. Make sure the hooks on the adjusters face away from your tire so your wheels don't get scratched.

Quick Tips:

  • Lengthen the life of snow chains by drying them after each use before you store them.
  • Check out our installation kit with safety lights and a kneeling pad (PO34FRK) to make things a little easier when you're installing chains out in the snow.

How to Choose Snow Chains for Your Vehicle

To choose the right snow chain, you must match your tire size. Those measurements can be found on the side of your tire.

Tire size on sidewall

185/60-15

  1. (185) - indicates tire width in millimeters
  2. (60) - gives you the aspect ratio (sidewall height as percentage of width)
  3. (15) - denotes the diameter of the wheel rim in inches

Video Transcript for Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains with Tensioners Review

Hey, everybody, Adam here with etrailer. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains. So these are a ladder pattern style chain. What that means is we're just going to have these cross chains going across. So these are gonna leave a little bit of gap. So we are gonna kinda go from chain to rubber, to chain to rubber.

These aren't going to be the smoothest of all the chains that you have, but when it comes to ladder rack or ladder pattern style chains, this is going to be fairly smooth because we do have the twist links. It's not gonna be as aggressive as the V-Bar style chains, because those are extremely aggressive. Those are gonna be for off-road and on-road. These are gonna be only for on-road, to make sure that you're not gonna go over 30 miles an hour 'cause they do have a speed rating. So you just want to make sure and do all of that.

One thing I like about these is the cam tensioners. These are really gonna take a lot of that slack out and you have a little tool that goes with it that goes in there. Which you have plenty of leverage to be able to get those chains on there. So it's going to be nice and tight. And another thing that I really noticed, we have one little section right here.

That's kind of close, but if you position them right, we're not gonna really have any contact with our wheels. I like that just because these aren't coated or anything, they're just made of a low carbon steel. So if it does start to hit these wheels, maybe we have some icy, deep snow and might start to kind of push in on this, but it's not really going to mess the sidewall of your tire up at all. If I we're to recommend another chain, it would just be the chains that aren't ladder pattern style. 'Cause these, you have to get down on the ground and make that connection in the back.

If you prepare for it in your garage, obviously you're not gonna have to get down in the snow, but odds a lot of the times you're just stuck, and that's why you put chains on. So with this you're gonna have to kinda get down and get a little wet whenever you install these. So we do have other ones that are just gonna have a connection in the back, they come as self-tensioning tire chains. And another thing that's nice about those. We don't have to grab the rubber tensioners. But these are gonna get the job done. You know, I don't really care, what's on my tires. I just wanna get unstuck. And these are gonna do that for you. It does come in a pack of two. So all you got to do is grab one of these and put 'em on your rear wheels. Just want to make sure and check your owner's manuals. Figure out exactly where the manufacturer wants you to put the chains. So always check just to be safe. And then it does come in a little canvas bag. This isn't my favorite bag. It does tend to kind of rip they do fit in there. So it's not really tough to get 'em in, once you take them off your tires, but this does rip over time. The chains are gonna last a long time, multiple seasons, easy. The bag, probably not. Some of the other options that aren't ladder pattern styles come in a hard carrying case, which is also a little bit easier and more aesthetically pleasing than just an old canvas bag. So, if you really are kind of looking for the whole entire package deal. Where you don't have to grab extra tensioners and you have a really nice carrying case. We do have a lot on our website, but these are going to get the job done. And that'll do it for a look at the Titan Chain Snow Tire Chains..

If you're on the fence about running chains, don't be. I have a north facing driveway that turns into a skate rink. One set of chains allows me to plow uphill, downhill, sideways, or whichever way I need to go. Absolute game changer. Only suggestion is to get yourself a better tool for the turnbuckle. A set of metal chisels from HF is $8. They are heavy duty and easy to throw in a door pocket. Pair it with an adjustable wrench and you'll thank me later.

I am happy with the purchase but I can not make any claims regarding the tire chains since I have been blessed to have not need them yet

by:

Bought these for our 2003 GMC Sierra 3500 extended cab, cab and chassis style dump Truck, equipped with 2016 Western MVP Plow. We live 20 minutes west of Whitefish Mt, where it snow`s heavy and roads and drives tend to do the Thaw/Freeze cycle pretty much everyday during the winter. I plow on a small scale and just locally, but the drives I plow are kinda steep and slippery, but with these chains on, my Truck is an instant HalfTrack vehicle and nothin` stops it. From the start receiving them, installation after checking out the online video, was a snap. Lay em out, cinch em up, turn the cam lock`s, take a grinder with a cutoff wheel and cut off the extra chain to the length my tires require, and I was unstoppable. Really enjoy these. You can also purchase the rubber circle they sell to keep tension throughout the outside wheel surface of the chain. I just use rubber bungy straps and clinch the metal "S" clips with a 4" channelocks. Oh yeah, I recommend these! And if you don`t drive over 30mph and you operate locally around the area you live, it`s a cheap alternative to buying Tire`s with studs, and you don`t have to swap tire`s out every season, or own a seperate set of studded tires and extra set of wheel`s. Good Luck this Winter....

Seems to be great chains. I use them on a snowplow, so they get used hard. No issues yet at all.

by:

Received the chains all good, put then on drove three times on them and chains bent and broke. And was only on pavement once and for couple feet.

by:

etrailer shipping was very fast, ordered on a Friday morning, shipped the same day and recieved on Tuesday of following week (3 working days). Installed on tires, perfect fit. I drove around 2 miles to see how they worked, done what they were suppose to. My only disappointment was "made in China", other than that I am happy with the purchase. Installed on a 2016 Ram 2500HD with 285/60R/20

by:

I test fit them today when they came in. Now I know where exactly to place them so the clamp isn't hitting the rim, as seen in the photo. They are heavy duty and bigger than my previous set. Also, to anyone interested in these, make sure to get heavy duty tie-straps to bind the end of the chain to itself so it is not flapping and smacking your shocks.I will do another review in a couple of months after using these in the mountains.

I have only used these a limited number of times but they got me out of a tricky situation when I needed them

by:

Bought two sets of these chains for my 2018 Ram 2500. My tires are LT285/60R20 and these chains fit like a charm.

Very easy to get onto the vehicle and off of it. Takes about 15 minutes to put on all 4 tires by myself.

Used these in northern NH for a hunting trip. We had about 18-inches of snow on the ground and we traveled logging roads the whole time. These chains got my trunk up a 45° incline covered in fresh 18" of snow. I was amazed that we weren't sliding all over the place. These things grab the snow/ice like claws.

I've recommended these chains to other folks because they are great. They are HEAVY chains, I think about 20+ pounds each. But they are serious chains for serious conditions.

Very, VERY happy with these chains.

Chains arrived at my house in 2 day, super good customer care

by:

I just got them and roads are dry so haven’t had a chance to try them out. The order-to-delivery was fast! Ordered them late Tuesday and they were delivered Friday. Very friendly customer service.

by:

Good quality and fits well. Easy to install and goes on just as video shows. Fits my 2022 Ram 2500 AT tires (275/70R18) perfectly.

by:

Love these chains! I have a Jeep JK with 285/70 17s on and I run these all the way around for snow jeeping. The tensioning "doughnuts" are awesome and I have yet to throw a chain, even when romping on it hard. My buddy with a 4-Runner bought vbar chains without the doughnuts and threw them quickly on our last run, while mine ran flawlessly.

by:

Just got the chains they fit well.As always etrailer is amazing to work with. I ordered the wrong ones and they had me the correct ones 2 days later. Always very helpful. Thank you

by:

Chains fit real good and were easy to install on my 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, just had to make sure chains were on correctly and also tight so it wouldn’t scratch rims when tires spin. When it came to using the chains on snow and icy roads they got the job done. I recommend this product.

by:

etrailer is the best! Great service without drama!

by:

The chains are exactly what I need and I received them quickly. Thank you.

by:

took a while to get. but overall excell ent.

by:

Chains arrived in a timely manner ,they fit perfectly, all parts were there.very happy with etrailer

by:

Great product will buy again

by:

More detailed installation instructions would really help. I spent almost 2 hours putting these on and they are still loose even with the rubber tensioner. Pictures with text would be greatly appreciated. The chains are of high quality and should last a long time. Just need better instructions.

by:

Just got them. I did put them on and they fit. Gave it four stars because the cross links weren’t on all the way.
Looks like it might work for what I need them.

by:

Quick shipping.... good service.... great product! I found hard to find chains for my tire size 285/65/20 for my ram 3500.... they fit very nicely on tires....bring on the snow and mud!

by:

The chains arrived on time and fit the tires well.

  • Replacement Wrengh and Recommended Adjustors for Titan Chain Tire Chains for 20" - 22-1/2" tires
For a replacement tightening tool that comes with the Titan Chain Tire Chains w/ Cams # TC2245CAM you need the Replacement L-Shaped Cam Tightening Wrench # TCLH2. Then for a rubber adjuster/tensioner I recommend the Glacier Multi-Arm Tire Chain Tensioners # PW103 because of the multiple arm connections. I've installed a handful of these before and I really like this design because it's easier to see where you need to be installing the hooks - just make sure they are opposite of each other...
