Video Transcript for Rhino Rack Roof Rack Review - 2019 Nissan Sentra

Hey everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer and today we're taking a look at the Rhino-Rack roof rack system which has a 46 inch long vortex aero bars, your towers and custom fit kit for your 2019 Nissan Sentra. So if you wanna get all kinds of different accessories on your Nissan Sentra, maybe you wanna carry around some kayaks or some roof mounted bike racks or roof box or even a roof basket. What you first need is a roof rack system. Now you do have a naked roof so it'll be a little bit more in terms of install process. Definitely doable and I'll show you how to do that later on in this video. So this specific kit has a 46 inch long crossbars and it's a good balance where you have a little bit of overhang, but not too much where you're hitting your head when you get inside the car.

So at the front you have about an inch of overhang and then for your rear crossbar you're gonna have about an inch and 1/2. Now there's also some other clearance things you may have to think about, and there's two measurements there. One is from the top of the roof to the bottom of your crossbar. So we have a clearance of about three inches. So if you have clamps on your accessories that go around those bars, that's how much space you have for them.

Now for the height added to the top of your roof that's gonna be about four and 3/4 inches. So that's gonna be where your cargo sits. If you wanna carry around skis and snowboards especially skis with extra tall bindings, you wanna make sure you have a good amount of clearance and if you don't have enough clearance that's when you can start taking a look at accessories that give you that extra lift. So these are vortex aero bars, if you remember the traditional round or square crossbars when you drive down the highway they'd have a lot of wind drag, wind noise, aero bars help fix that. So less wind drag, less wind noise, and they're more aerodynamic.

Plus, with these you have the vortex aero strips on top, so you take them out and then you can have access to your T-track channel. Downside to these is you're gonna have to cut them up to fit around your accessories. If you're planning on doing that, I recommend getting an extra kit so that you're ready when you do so. If you are using those T-track accessories you have this locking end cap. So on its own you do get a Rhino-Rack security key which you can use to lock and unlock that end cap in order to pop it off, or you can upgrade it to something that matches your towers.

So you can get your separate metal lock cores, and if you get an entire kit, you can have it all keyed alike so that one key can match the whole system. So I recommend using a T-track channel because then you can maximize the length of your crossbar. The downside to that is it could be tempting to overweigh your system. This does have 165 pound weight capacity. So count up the weight of your cargo, the weight of your accessories, the weight of your system, which is about 11 pounds and make sure that does not exceed your roof weight capacity. So this includes everything you need to install your roof rack but there's some other tools that I pick up to make it easier. One's gonna be your box cutter to cut up the strips and another's gonna be a tape measure. Now let's take a look at that process. So the install process for your Nissan Sentra may be a little tricky because it is a naked roof but that's what this video is for and guide you through the process explaining why there's different numbers for the pads, for the hooks how to get towers onto the crossbars, things like that. So first we will start with the towers. With the end cap off, you can just slide your tower onto or into the track underneath the crossbar. So this being the front crossbar we're gonna have a 282 and 281 pad, one for the right one for the left, you're also gonna have these plates. So your pads and your plates will have arrows. You want the pad facing forward and then the arrow facing out, pop the pad onto that plate. It should just snap into place. And then once that's together you can put the plates onto the tower. Okay, and I'll do the same on the other side. Next you're gonna have your measuring strip. So for the front crossbar, we want our towers at 201. So put that strip in, line it up to 201 and then you're going to cut it. Do the same on the other side. And then once you have that to the right measurement tighten it down with your included tool. So then you're gonna measure for your vehicle where you're gonna put your front crossbar. There's a specific spot. So for our front crossbar, it's gonna be nine inches and 27, 30 second of an inch, so almost 10. And you're gonna have included stickers that you can put down there if you need that to mark your spot. Now you can gently place your crossbar onto your roof since you have those rubber pads on. That will help cushion it as you get them all lined up. So once you're both lined up the final step is to get that hook into the tower. So it is a little tricky since you need to line up with that bolt with that nut in the back. Just get that threaded in and hand tighten down. So I say start by hand tightening. That way you can evenly tighten down your towers. In fact, I recommend doing maybe about 50% on one side, 75% on the other side, going back and forth. That way you don't skew it all to one side or the other as you tighten. So you'll know you'll have it fully tightened down because there's a torque spec on your tool. So once that handle fully flattens out or is straight, then you know you have about four to five Newton meters of tension. And then you have it nice and secure. You can even slam your door on that. To cap it off, put your end caps in as well as the doors of the tower. Use your key to lock it and secure it and do that on all four sides. Once everything is secure, that's it with the install process. You're ready to load this up and go. So my personal thoughts about your roof rack system is even though your options are limited for the Nissan Sentra with its naked roof, this is still a great option. Rhino-Rack is known for being sporty, easy to use and still provide that great experience for carrying around those accessories without being too pricey.
