Video Transcript for Westin Sure-Grip Running Boards Installation - 2018 Ford Explorer

Shane: Hi, I'm Shane from etrailer.com. Today you're going to be taking a look at, I'm going to walk you through the installation on the Western Sure Grip Running Boards for your 2018 Ford Explorer. There are many different reasons to add running boards to your vehicle. Maybe you want to dress it up. Maybe you have some children that like their . have a hard time getting in and out of the vehicle. You know kids, they like doing stuff on their own.

Maybe you have parents or grandparents that have a hard time stepping up into the vehicle or pulling ourselves up into a vehicle. This is going to give them a solid foundation and an extra step to help them get in and out of the car a little bit easier. This kit's going to come with two steps. One for each side of the vehicle. They're both going to be 72 inches long, which means it's going to provide a step, not only for your driver, but all passengers in the vehicle. Each step is going to be constructed of an anodized aluminum, so it's going to be rust proof.

They're also going to have a 4.5-inch wide rubber pad that's going to run the full length of the board. It's going to have grooves in it that channel water away so it doesn't pull up. Help us maintain that sure footing during those wet conditions. Our steps are not only going to be functional, but they're going to add style to your vehicle. They're going to have rounded edges that are going to fit in nicely with the contour of the vehicle. We're going to have an insert back here that helps the step look like it's integrated.

Each step is going to have molded end caps to help finish off the style of the step. And if we have children or elderly family members, there's also light kits available to help him see that step a little bit better at night. Those can be found here at etrailer.com.Now that we've gone over some of the features Let's show you how to get them installed. We're going to start with a flathead screwdriver. Our rocker panel plastic cover here is going to have some little clips on the inside, all the way down the side, or all the way down the underneath of it.

We need to pop those out so that we can loosen this up. The two very front ones, this one and this one, we're going to take completely out. The rest of them we'll just pop out because we'll be reinstalling those. Now we're going to take some cutters. We're going to have to trim this down because we're going to be putting a flat Washer, a lock Washer, and a nut on here. Just go like this. Just to give us a little more space. You're going to have to J bolts, actually, you're going to have four. I'm going to have two for the other side. They're going to look like this. We're going to insert this end. You're going to have to move it around to get it to sit just like that. Do the same thing here. Same thing on the other side. You're going to have a bolt . couple of bolt plates look like this. First one, if you're going to be right inside, you're going to see a large opening. You'll take it and you're going to slide it in. Just like that. Then you're going to put on a plastic retaining clip. This is just to keep it from pushing up into the frame of the vehicle. We're going to take our front driver's side bracket. You want to make sure that this lip here, it's going on the outside, it is facing the rear.Again, this is the front one, and this is going to be our passenger side. We're going to go . We're going to pull our rocker panel out like this or the rocker panel cover. We're going to slide, and this is where it might be easier if you have your door open to get our hardware to slide in there, like that. Now, we're going to take a large flat washer here on the bolts underneath, lock Washer, and then a large hex nut. Here for these, we're going to put on a flat Washer, a lock washer, and a nut. We'll have another bolt plate. In the rear, we're going to have another hole and this is underneath the vehicle. Going to do the same thing here. Put our nut plate in. We're going to take our passenger's side rear bracket. It's going to be opposite. This flange is actually going to face towards the front. We're going to set it in place like this. Go ahead and put the nut on the bolt here, like this. And what we're going to do is we're going to mark this spot here because we're going to have to drill a hole. We're going to take our small hex bolt. I'm going to pull this out like this. I'm going to slide it into the hole, like that. We'll take our rear bracket, up into place. Flat Washer, lock Washer, and a nut. Flat washer, lock washer, and nut. We're going to take our board, we're going to have square head bolts. We're going to slide in the front slot and the very back slot, like that. We're going to put two at this end. Two at the other end. We're going to flip it over. We're going to line it up with the slots in each bracket. We'll take a 3/4-inch socket. We're going to tighten our large bolt underneath the vehicle.Directions are going to tell you to tighten these two. What I suggest is take this off and then tighten them down. Because if you don't, when you get a wrench right here, it could scratch this edge. So now I'm just going to slide this off, set it aside for a second. Take my 9/16ths socket. You're going to take a 1/2-inch socket and wrench, tighten this one down on the rear bracket.Go ahead and reinstall your fasteners for your panel. And you're going to have a guard that looks like this. If you flip your step over, you're going to have three Phillips-head screws. Pull those out. We're going to slide this end cap off. We're going to take this guy, and we're just going to slide it right in this channel. Just like that. And we'll reinstall our end cap. And we're going to take our step and we're going to slide it in, just like this. And for each one, we're going to put a flat washer and a nylon lock nut.Now what we need to do is center it. What I'm doing is I'm taking this edge right here and lining it up with this edge, on the front. In the back, you should line up this edge with this edge. You can either pull it out, all the way out or you can push it in. I think what I'm going to do is I'm going to pull it out, take a 1/2-inch socket or wrench, and we'll tighten our bolts down. Once you get one side done, you're going to repeat the process on the other side.Again, I'm Shane with etrailer.com. I hope this video has helped you, whether you're still deciding or installing the Western Sure Grip Running Boards on your 2018 Ford Explorer.

I recommend this running boards. If you are determined you can install by yourself. It took me approximately 1.5 hours for each side.

Overall looks good and helps with the kids.

2019 Ford Explorer

Looks great on my 2019 Ford Explorer. Easy installation, took me and friend 1.5 hours without lift.

by:

Had them for a year so far, no complaints. They work well and mount fairly sturdy. I wouldn't rely on them as nerf bars for offroading but they work just fine as side steps. Install was easy, just use basic handtools. If you do lose the J hook in the small slot when installing, it is possible to fish it out with a bent telescoping magnet

WE LOVE THE RUNNING BOARDS WE PURCHASED A YEAR AGO. THEY MAKE IT ALOT EASIER FOR ME TO GET INTO THE EXPLORER AND ALSO TO GET OUT. IN MY MIND THEY MAKE THE VEHICLE LOOK BETTER.

by:
Ford Explorer

They are high quality and work very well.
My
son and I installed them and all parts worked and they attached running boards solidly. Pleased to have them on my Explorer.

I don't have to think--I KNOW! etrailer sells only the best.
I not only like the products they sell but the friendly helpful staff as well.
I am 90 years old but plan to install these running boards on my explorer by using the instructions enclosed. Nuff said

by:

I Love em'. They help with our dog that gets in as well as my wife.

by:

by:

I like them. The only drawback is the treadwidth. We have to turn our feet ifewYs to get a good foothold on the running board.

by:

These running boards were an easy 2 person installation. The added sleeve to fill the gap keeps the side and bottom of doors clean by most of so much easier to get in and out of the truck

by:

Order placed 1/1/24. Received 1/4/24. Two boxes, 1 with running boards, second with hardware, all good. 2 black plastic "J-strips" in long box not included on parts list nor described in instructions (packing spacers?). Broke two square head bolts off while tightening nylon nuts holding running boards onto support brackets - very soft, be careful. Running boards otherwise look great and appear well built. Other aspects of install on 2024 4-Runner were straight forward and were completed in about 75 minutes.

by:

Fit perfectly to replace my damaged running board

by:

It was easy to install. Had 2 extra parts in box that the instructions did not cover. I called the 800 number and the person new what I was talking about right away. He explained where it went and how to install it. It only took me and a helper about 45 minutes to install.

by:

VERY happy with the finished product. There were a couple steps not called out in the instructions that I had to figure out*, but once I did... all went together easy enough. First side I installed, the passenger side, took about an hour, and the driver side took about 30 mins.
*First was a trim strip that comes in the box. Had to figure out how to mate them to each running board. Also, on my wife's 2023 4Runner, there was a small (~2" x 5") piece of plastic in front of each rear wheel. My hunch is that it's to protect against stuff getting flung up. Had to remove those from each side to make room for the running boards. Once removed, all just came together easily.

by:

The runningboards that where installed a year ago are still looking brand new. It made a great addition to my Explorer, not just for the look but for the practical use. My wife who needs that extra step is grateful. etrailer did an awesome job helping picking the right product for my vehicle, the sale and installation.

by:

I really like these runningboards. They look great on the truck they were nicely. Everything is good.

by:

Not only stylish but worked perfectly for the lift application for my handicap wife

by:

Love it but it was missing one bolt for the running board M 8 square head bolt

by:

Great product and easy installation. It only took about one hour to install these and they look great. Perfect fit for my 2019 Colorado.

by:

Arrived 1 day early. Installed it in less than an hour and a half. Looks fantastic. Did not have to drill any holes. Simple bolt up install. Instructions were okay , would suggest using the [online] video- very helpful. Looking to now order a hitch

by:

Kit was delivered promptly. Installation instructions were clear. There was even a note in the instructions about excess paint likely to exist on specific frame bolts. My only suggestion in this case would be to use a die to clear the threads. I purchased one separately to fix this issue. I could not get the nuts on otherwise, and I didn't want to strip the threads.
Other than that hiccup, installation was a breeze.

by:

Easy to install, look great. Another trouble free order. Keep it up and I'll be back

by:

They need another brace that I will make. The rear mount flexes the metal on the cab. Fit good but not real sturdy.

by:

easy install & look great !!!

by:

Quick delivery. Extremely nice running boards and easy to install. What a difference they make on my 4runner. Thank you for your service.
