Video Transcript for Westin Sure Grip Running Boards Installation - 2013 Ford Edge

Today on our 2013 Ford Edge we'll be taking a look at and installing the Westin Sure-Grip Running Boards with Custom Installation Kit. Part number 27-6125-1825. This is how our running boards will look like once they are installed on our vehicle. They're going to have that nice sleek, slim look adding to the vehicle's profile. They're going to be 6 inches wide with a step-pad of 4 1/2 inches. Total length of the boards is going to be 72 inches.

The step-pad is going to be unique in that it's going to be rubber for a sure grip. You can see there how I'm pressing. It's also going to have the grooves, similar to a tire tread. That's going to channel the water away. With a sturdy aluminum construction it's also going to help to prevent any kind of corrosion.

With the built in end caps, it's going to keep the corrosion out of the inside. It's going to have a nice black, powder-coat finish and with a quick and easy installation, we're just bolts on. It's not going to require you to drill anything. Now let's go ahead and see how they're installed. First thing we're going to need to do is get under the back end of the vehicle and undo some fasteners and screws to lower the plastic piece that's underneath the bottom. This plastic skirting is going to be in the way of where we need to mount our front brackets.

There's going to be several mounting points. One screw securing the back here, as well as a few push fasteners along the way. Again, we'll need to remove those. We've already removed the push type. These are going to be the pull-down ones.

You can use a flat-head screwdriver or a trim panel removal tool which will look like this. We'll set the plastic trim aside until the very end where we'll need to trim it to fit around our mounting bracket. Each bracket is going to be a little bit different. Your going to have the two front brackets which are going to be shorter, but the mounting brackets for them, and the plate where your step will sit is going to be located in a different spot or facing a different direction. Make sure that you place close attention to the instructions before you get started. As you can see we'll put it up into place here. The rear one is going to have the J-hook style bolt. They put a plastic cover over it which is going to go in between he mounting bracket and the body of the vehicle since the bracket is steel and the body is aluminum. This will help to prevent any kind of corrosion. Slide it up into place, and rotate it around. Next we'll go ahead and place on our front one. Our front bracket is going to consist of a bolt with the spacer threaded on to it. You thread your bolt through your spacer, place your plastic cover on, and put it up into the plug hole. Push the spacer all the way up. Let's go ahead and test out our bracket. It's going to look about like so. Now we'll go ahead and put our lock washer, flat washers, and our nuts in place. Once I get it started on here you'll have a better view. It'll look like so. We'll go ahead and thread that down until it catches. That will hold it in place while we put on our back one. Then we'll go ahead and leave these loosely fastened until we get our running boards in place. Now on the back side we're going to locate the mounting bracket just in front of the rear tire. This is going to be the mounting bracket for the rear suspension. We'll need to remove two of the factory bolts which are going to be the forward-most bolts. These bolts will sandwich the bracket in place using that existing factory hardware. The rear bracket should look something like this and it'll mount up about like so, at an angle just like the front one is. Notice the difference between the bolts. You should always place those back in the right place where you pulled them from. Take your rear bracket and then take that factory hardware, and thread them back in. Always remember to hand thread them in so you don't cross-thread them. Once we have them started we'll go ahead and secure. With our rear brackets secure we'll go ahead and go up front to secure the front ones. Now that those are all the way up, we'll bring them back down a turn or two, just to make sure the bracket's loose for when we put up our running board. Now we'll go ahead and raise your Sure-Grip Running Boards up in place. With those resting, we'll go ahead and place in our hardware, into the tracks. You'll see that it has a square top on the top of the bolt. Those will slide inside the tracks and drop into our mounting brackets. You can see here how we have the track. Slide the bolt in just like so. Place one on the outside one and one on the inside one. Drop them into the holes. Here you can see our bolts through the mounting bracket and notice that they will have a little bit of room to move around. You can adjust your running boards how you like them so we want to ensure that we leave these loose once we get the hardware on. Place the washer and a lock nut on the bottom side of each of those bolts. We'll repeat that same process on the back one. Now we'll go ahead and tighten down our brackets. Now we'll go ahead and torque down our support brackets to the manufacturer's specifications. Now we'll go ahead an tighten down the bolts securing the running board. You see that we do have a little bit of room. Make sure you press it in and then tighten them down. Go ahead and tighten them down with this and then give them a solid turn since the torquing specifications are lower for these smaller bolts. All right, now we'll go ahead and slide our plastic piece back up into place and see where we're going to need to trim it. It looks like we're going to need to shave it back to this point here, and this point here. We'll go ahead and pull it down, make a straight line across, and shave it off. You can use tin snips or a rotary tool to do so. Now let's go ahead and put it back up in place and see how it fits. That looks like it's going to be a solid fit. Now we'll go ahead and reattach our plastic cover using the screws first to hold it in place. Then our push fasteners after that to hold and secure everything in place. Now let's go ahead and repeat that same installation process on the other side. That'll do it for our review and installation of the Westin Sure-Grip Running Boards with Custom Installation Kit. Part number 27-6125-1825 on our 2013 Ford Edge.

I like them. The only drawback is the treadwidth. We have to turn our feet ifewYs to get a good foothold on the running board.

by:

These running boards were an easy 2 person installation. The added sleeve to fill the gap keeps the side and bottom of doors clean by most of so much easier to get in and out of the truck

by:

Order placed 1/1/24. Received 1/4/24. Two boxes, 1 with running boards, second with hardware, all good. 2 black plastic "J-strips" in long box not included on parts list nor described in instructions (packing spacers?). Broke two square head bolts off while tightening nylon nuts holding running boards onto support brackets - very soft, be careful. Running boards otherwise look great and appear well built. Other aspects of install on 2024 4-Runner were straight forward and were completed in about 75 minutes.

by:

These running boards make it very easy to get in and out of my 4Runner. They look great as well, so can't ask for more. My husband didn't have any problem with the install.

by:

Fit perfectly to replace my damaged running board

by:

Looks great. Only an hour and a half to install myself. Thanks.

by:

VERY happy with the finished product. There were a couple steps not called out in the instructions that I had to figure out*, but once I did... all went together easy enough. First side I installed, the passenger side, took about an hour, and the driver side took about 30 mins.
*First was a trim strip that comes in the box. Had to figure out how to mate them to each running board. Also, on my wife's 2023 4Runner, there was a small (~2" x 5") piece of plastic in front of each rear wheel. My hunch is that it's to protect against stuff getting flung up. Had to remove those from each side to make room for the running boards. Once removed, all just came together easily.

by:

It was easy to install. Had 2 extra parts in box that the instructions did not cover. I called the 800 number and the person new what I was talking about right away. He explained where it went and how to install it. It only took me and a helper about 45 minutes to install.

by:

Not only stylish but worked perfectly for the lift application for my handicap wife

by:

Look great in my new Ram!!!!

by:

The runningboards that where installed a year ago are still looking brand new. It made a great addition to my Explorer, not just for the look but for the practical use. My wife who needs that extra step is grateful. etrailer did an awesome job helping picking the right product for my vehicle, the sale and installation.

by:

Love it but it was missing one bolt for the running board M 8 square head bolt

by:

I really like these runningboards. They look great on the truck they were nicely. Everything is good.

by:

Great product and easy installation. It only took about one hour to install these and they look great. Perfect fit for my 2019 Colorado.

by:

Arrived 1 day early. Installed it in less than an hour and a half. Looks fantastic. Did not have to drill any holes. Simple bolt up install. Instructions were okay , would suggest using the [online] video- very helpful. Looking to now order a hitch

by:

Kit was delivered promptly. Installation instructions were clear. There was even a note in the instructions about excess paint likely to exist on specific frame bolts. My only suggestion in this case would be to use a die to clear the threads. I purchased one separately to fix this issue. I could not get the nuts on otherwise, and I didn't want to strip the threads.
Other than that hiccup, installation was a breeze.

by:

I recommend this running boards. If you are determined you can install by yourself. It took me approximately 1.5 hours for each side.

Overall looks good and helps with the kids.

by:

Easy to install, look great. Another trouble free order. Keep it up and I'll be back

by:

They need another brace that I will make. The rear mount flexes the metal on the cab. Fit good but not real sturdy.

by:

easy install & look great !!!

by:

Good quality. Definitely recommend a second person just to give a hand and check to make sure it's even. Very sturdy and decent amount for stepping on and off.

by:

Quick delivery. Extremely nice running boards and easy to install. What a difference they make on my 4runner. Thank you for your service.

by:

GREAT Product! Price was perfect. Fits well, looks like OEM and actually looks better than the Ford sidestep (non electric).
Needs: perhaps a little wider and a taller gap from step to door. My foot slipped a few times on entry and on exit, not much room to step on. That is my only grip....Overall and outstanding product!

by:

Good fit, love the design and contour.

by:

Looks great on my 2019 Ford Explorer. Easy installation, took me and friend 1.5 hours without lift.
