Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at the CURT Quick Goose 2 gooseneck hitch with the installation kit, and this is for the Dodge Ram 1500 trucks. Has a 30,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, I mentioned it's a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2002 to 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 trucks.
And on a custom fit part like this, I do recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show if this will work for your application. Now, this will let you quickly and easily engage and disengage this ball without having to climb into your truck bed. Uses a nice, heavy-duty engagement system, which is very secure, very easy to use. It's a two-handle operation. You can see over here, there's two handles and that's for raising and lowering the gooseneck ball.
Basically, the one with the red grip on it, the red handle, this will operate the choker, which secures the ball in place. And then the black handle right here that has the black grip on it, that is what will raise and lower the ball. Those dual handles eliminate the need to have to climb in and out of your truck bed. The nice hidden ball design of this allows for a clean, low-profile look when the ball is disengaged. Basically, it'll drop, the drop ball storage keeps the truck bed free of any obstructions.
If you notice it has this nice, attractive chrome color. And they do even include this rubber cap to cover the ball when it's in the stowed position. The ball itself is your standard chrome plated 2 5/16 diameter gooseneck ball. Fits all standard gooseneck trailers. So, just to show you, right now, it's in the engaged position.
So, you're ready to tow with it. When you're ready to disengage it, all you have to do is pull the red one and that'll, as you can see, releases. And there's a little ledge there that you just twist it and it'll hold it into the release position, so it's holding the choker out, releasing the ball. So, when you just pull this down, you can see once you pull that down far enough, then you just release the choker over here, and that'll hold it right into the stowed position. Now, it's locked in that position. You can put your cap on there. And it's all free as your truck bed, or your truck beds, nothing in the way. It does also include these built-in spring loaded safety chain loops to provide added security. It is protected by a highly durable carbide powder coat finish. They do use yellow zinc plating to provide corrosion resistance for all the locking mechanism. And I did mention, if you notice these brackets here, it does include the custom installation kit with the grade 8 hardware all included. Now, the installation requires no welding or truck bed removal. There may be modifications to your vehicle that might be required. Few installation tips, it will require a 3 5/8 inch diameter hole in the truck bed for the ball hole, and then 4 5/8 inch diameter holes for these safety chain U-bolts to come through. We mentioned the ball size on it is 2 5/16 diameter. Gross towing weight capacity is 30,000 pounds. Tongue weight capacity of 7,500 pounds. Now, on the capacity, I do wanna mention it is determined by that of your vehicle. So, if the capacity will be limited to the lowest rated towing component in your system, so you do wanna make sure not to exceed the recommended vehicle towing weight. Get a turnover ball and don’t be the sucker I ended up.
I laugh every time I think of the convenience I thought I was getting by not having to climb in the back of the truck. I don’t know if mine is defective or if this device is actually a workout program mixed with an anger management exercise in disguise. I’ve been using it for a year now, but within a month I developed a strategy for getting my trailer hooked up.
First I climb into the back of the truck to cut the duct tape off I’ve used to attach the worthless rubber cap which falls off every chance it gets, filling the mechanism with whatever you have in your truck. If you ever plan to do anything with the bed of the truck besides pulling your gooseneck, haul hay, a four wheeler, anything dirty it will definitely jam your ball.
After the tape is off I fight the first lever, I yank, turn, pull, twist, bang, swivel, dance this lever into the exact position. I climb under the truck and cover myself with wheel grease and scum getting the thing to unlock.
Then the second lever, to lift and drop the ball. Repeat the steps of the first lever with less twisting, but add climbing into the bed with a hammer, banging the ball, climbing underneath, banging the lift arm, banging underneath, shaking, bouncing and sweet talking this POS into the upward position.
Stop to spit curse and wipe the sweat out of your eyes and clean any wounds you got banging your knuckles.
Now repeat the first lever steps AGAIN, including going under, going up, and under and in the wheel well so far you find whatever you ran over the other day that made you say “hmm” all over the front of your shirt.
Repeat in opposite order when you want to put it down.
I’m so embarrassed about this hunk of junk that I stop on the side of the road a half hour before I get to anything I’ve got to pick up just so no one has to see me cursing, crying and throwing a tantrum getting this thing in place.
Please don’t buy this item, you don’t deserve this kind of punishment.
Nice solid unit that will definitely last a lifetime but even new this unit is not very user friendly. I have it installed on a 99 c/k3500. Installation of the unit was easy but the 2 levers for raising and locking the ball are not well designed. if you pull the left handle to far, the ball gets stuck in the down position and you have to crawl under the truck and push it back up. The right handle is supposed to somehow lock it into position but I have yet to figure out a reliable system for doing that. I had to shorten both handles to clear the rear tire and with the tire blocking the handles it is difficult and dirty to operate them and usually you smash your hands when the levers do finally go into place. The rubber cap is worthless and generally ends up bouncing out.
On my 2nd truck, I went with the style you put the ball in by hand and it is a much easier unit to operate.
Shipped on time, installed easily, tows excellent! I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. For fifty dollars more I can lift or lower the ball without climbing in and out of the bed, win!
Very easy to install, I did it by myself in under 2Hrs. Works great you just have to make sure you keep it clean which sometimes isn't easy if you haul any materials in your truck. Mine got stuck pretty good after hauling torn up concrete, the dust and small pieces jammed it up so the ball would not pop up.
Hitch works good. I have issue with, ball doesn't move to easy when it gets dirt in it.
