Hi there, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Custom Fit Liftgate Gas Strut. So this gas strut is gonna replace a worn out or damaged strut on your vehicle's liftgate. This is designed specifically for your 2004 through 2008 Mazda 6 Hatchback. So if you do have a Mazda 6 and the your liftgate is slowly closing on you, it doesn't seem to hold itself up like it used to, this is gonna be a great replacement for you. It's gonna extend from the tube to help open the liftgate, give you a little bit of assist and hold it in place, keep it open while you're loading your groceries, and that sort of thing.

And then it is going to compress slowly to close the liftgate without slamming shut, so you don't have to worry about getting your fingers caught or anything like that. This is gonna be a very simple and very fast tool-free installation. We've got the ball sockets on both ends that are just going to snap directly onto your vehicle's OEM ball stud fitting. So it might take a little bit of work to remove the original. You can see these do have kind of a metal ring on the backside there, so you'll probably need to use a flathead screwdriver and pry that up in order to loosen that connection on the original fitting.

So that removal will take a flathead screwdriver. But getting this new one installed, it'll just snap right in place. So, very simple to get the new one going. It is always recommended that if you have two struts, one on each side, that you do re replace both of them at the same time. That way, one's not stronger than the other and providing more resistance, potentially warping or damaging your hinge.

So something to keep in mind there. Just to give you some extra reassurance that this is gonna work for you, with our extended length here, from the center of one ball socket to the center of the other, our extended length is 22 7/16 of an inch long. If we we're to compress this down, it would be about 12 15/16 of an inch. This does have a dampening groove inside the tube. That's gonna help prevent bouncing and provide a nice smooth operation even in really cold temperatures.

It does also have an internal wiper that's gonna prevent sticking and reduce friction by lubricating the rod with oil. This does have a steel tube and a nitrate coated rod, that we also have that black powder coat finish there. So it's gonna be very rust-resistant, will hold up well for you.
