Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the rear threshold and some interior lining to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11143900 Review

Today we're going to review part number HM11143900. This is the Hopkins plug-in vehicle-specific wiring harness with the 4-pole trailer connector. Now this is a custom fit part number. This is designed to fit the Kia Cadenza starting in 2014. Now this plug-in wiring harness will provide a no-hassle, quick and easy way to install a 4-pole connector on your tow vehicle. Now this 4-pole connector when it's installed will plug into the 4-pole on your trailer and provide power for the lights on your trailer. This plug-in custom wiring kit utilizes the pre-wired factory OEM connectors for water tight protection, guaranteed fit, and a very easy installation. This connectors here will connect to the rear of your vehicle's taillights.

There's no cutting or splicing required; they just plug in. Now the 4-pole on the other end, this basically uses the corrosion-resistant terminals. It also has a nice dust cap that when you're not using it you just put the cap right over it and that will also help protect it. Now this part includes everything shown here on the table. Includes this powered converter module and the connectors all together. It includes this length of 14-gauge wire which would be used to run a connection up to your vehicle's battery. Does include this fuse assembly that you'll want to attach to the wire before you hook to the battery to have a fuse in it.

Includes the 15-amp fuse that would go right in there. It includes a grounding screw for the white wire on the module. Also includes some cable ties to take up any of the slack in this wire that you would run to the front of your vehicle. It also has a nice packet of dielectric grease that you would use when you put them on the terminals here when you attach your trailer harness to the 4-way. Now this powered converter module will adapt your vehicle's wiring harness to work with the trailer. It safeguards your vehicle's wiring system by pulling power for the trailer lights directly from the vehicle's battery, not through your factory existing wires in your vehicle so it protects the electrical system in your car or tow vehicle. Basically when you go to install this what you'll do is go to the back of your vehicle.

You'll disconnect the connectors at the back of your taillights and you'll plug these connectors in. You'll notice there's two sets. The one with the yellow wire in it, this would be for the driver side. You'll plug those in on the driver side. This one here with the single green wire and the extra length of wire, this will run across the car to the passenger side.

These connectors will plug into the passenger side of the vehicle. Now the two remaining wires, you can see the white wire that has a length I got spooled up here with the eyelet on the end. This is what you'll want to make your ground with. You want to attach this to a screw that's going to give you a good clean ground. If you don't have one available you can drill a hole and use this grounding screw that's included. This wire with the butt connector on it is what would be the power wire that goes to your vehicle's battery. You'll take this length of 14-gauge wire, take one end of it, attach it to there, run that underneath your car to the very front of it, use the other end to connect to the butt connector on this fuse assembly. Then that way the other end with the eyelet on it will connect to your battery. Then before you hook everything up you put your 15-amp fuse that's included in there, close the cap over that, and then your harness would be all ready to go. Now a few specs on this control module. Does have a maximum amperage. You want to make sure the stop and turn lights are three amps per circuit maximum, and the taillights is a six amp maximum. That should do it for the review on part number HM11143900, the Hopkins plug-in vehicle-specific wiring harness with the 4-pole trailer connector. .
