Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area, on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the rear threshold and some interior lining to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11143825 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at part number HM11143825, this is the Hopkins Plugin Simple Vehicle Specific Wiring Harness. It's going to provide your 4-pole flat trailer connector at the rear of your vehicle to help power your trailer signal lights. This product is designed to fit certain years and models of the Kia Forte. The plugin's simple custom wiring kit is going to utilize the factory connections on the vehicle to attach your trailer wiring harness. What that means is it's a pretty simple do it yourself installation, you don't have to worry about cutting or splicing any of your wires. All you have to do is locate the connection points in your rear cargo area.

You can see right here we're going to have our converter box, now this is going to be our powered converter modulite, this is going to adapt the vehicle's wiring system to work with the trailer. It's going to safeguard the vehicle's wiring system by pulling power for the tail lights directly from the vehicle battery and not through the existing wires. This is the focal point of the system, on this side we're going to have the 4-way flat wiring system, so we're going to have the four wires running to the 4-pole connector, that's going to be stored in the rear cargo area or the trunk and we can pull out whenever we need to make our connection and power trailer signal lights, so that's all on this side. Then on this side we're going to have all of our connectors. You're going to have a connector here with the green wire, that's going to run to the passenger side of the vehicle. You're going to need to locate the connection points, again, they're going to be in your rear cargo area behind the tail light assemblies.

Then you're going to have the side with the yellow and red wire as well as brown, this is going to stay on the driver side of the vehicle. The connectors are going to match up perfectly with one another so they're going to be very easy just to snap into place, they're going to connect, lock into place for a nice tight secure fit. You're going to have your white wire with the ring terminal already attached to it, that's going to be for your ground connection, you need to make that to a nice clean metal surface. You can do that with the provided self tapping screw and then you're also going to need to make sure that you mount your converter box, the modulite. You can do that, it's got the little ears here on the side with the holes in it, you can secure it using the included zip ties and then you're going to have a red wire with a butt connector already attached to it. This is going to be your power wire. This is going to connect to the bundle of red wire with the included connector and then the red wire's going to route under your vehicle, along the frame, all the way up to the engine compartment and the other end of the red wire's going to connect to one end of the fuse holder.

It's already got the butt connector attached to it, other end of the fuse holder has a ring terminal on it and that's going to attach to the positive post on the vehicle battery. It's going to come with the included fuse that goes inside the fuse holder right here. Once you have all that connected, really the actual installation is complete, then you'll just need to do a few other things. That's going to come with some more zip ties that way you can secure the excess wiring that you may have, keep it up and out of the way. It's also going to come with a terminal grease packet and that's designed to be applied to all of the connection points, the electrical connection points to prevent any type of corrosion from being able to settle in. Here on the 4-way flat connector it's going to come with a dust cap on there that way you can protect the connection points when your connector's not being used.

The maximum amperage for your stop and turn lights is going to be three amps per circuit and for the tail lights it's going to be six amps per circuit. It's going to come with some nice detailed instructions, these are going to walk you through the installation process step by step. That's going to do it for our review of part number HM11143825, this is the Hopkins 4-pole Trailer Connector.
