Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side tail lights. You will have to remove the floor covers, some internal paneling, and the tail light assemblies to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

T-One Connection Location Points Behind Tail Lights

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11140554 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with a 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector. This product fits certain years of the Ford Focus hatchback. You can use the vehicle fit guide located at etrailer.com to ensure that this is a fit for your vehicle. It's going to provide a four way flat connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. This is compatible with five pull, six pull, and seven pull adapters. Adapters are sold separately. It's going to come with a dust cap for the four-way flat connector.

That way you can cover up the connection points when your plugs are not being used. The black box right here is the included tail light convertor. This is want to insure that your vehicle's wiring matches that of your trailers. The power module connects directly to the vehicle battery through the wiring to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. This unit is designed to connect quickly and easily. All you got to do is locate the connection points behind the tail lights and plug in your connectors. The connectors with the green wire goes to the passenger side, the other set goes to the driver's side.

The plugs on this harness are going to match up perfectly with the ports on the vehicle. They're going to snap-lock together for a nice, tight, secure fit. The unit also comes with detailed installation instructions to help walk you through the entire process, step-by-step. Once you have those done, you'll need to make a ground connection. That's going to be your white wire. It has a ring terminal already attached to it.

You want to get that grounded to a suitable grounding location with the included grounding screw. Then you'll need to mount the convertor box in an out-of-the-way location. There's going to be a mount on each side. That way you can get it mounted and secured using the included cable ties. Next, you'll need to run the hot lead to the vehicle battery. That's your red wire with the butt connector already attached to it.

That gets connected to one end of the bundle of wiring, the other end of the bundle runs to the vehicle battery. It gets connected to one half of the fuse holder here at the butt connector. The other half of the fuse holder has a ring terminal pre-attached to it. That gets connected to the positive post of the vehicle battery. It does come with a 15-amp fuse, goes directly in here. It's got the fuse cap that goes over to keep it safe and protected. Then you can secure any excess or slack in the wires with the included cable ties, any of them that you have left over. You can get all your wires up and out of the way. Once the installation is complete, the four-way connector is going to be stowed in your rear cargo area. Plenty of wiring here so you can extend it out the back when you need to use it and tuck it away when it's not in use. It's also recommended that you use a small amount of terminal grease on all your electrical connections, like the plugs on the vehicle in the four-port connector itself. It's going to help prevent corrosion to the terminals. The grease packet is included with the kit. It comes with the maximum amperage for the stop and turn lights, we're looking at three amps per circuit. For the tail lights, we're looking at six amps per circuit. That's going to do it for today's look at the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector.
