Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the rear threshold and interior lining to access this harness. Once you've plugged in the connector, run the red hot lead up to your car battery. Connect the included fuse holder, and then connect the fuse holder to the positive terminal on your battery.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your rear cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Powered Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. This converter is a battery-powered unit that bypasses the electrical routes that are used by a basic wiring harness. As a result, there is virtually no draw on your tail light circuits.

Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - HM11140395 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Hopkins plug in simple vehicle wiring harness with the four way flat trailer connector. Now this is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2006-2011 Mercury Milan and the 2007-2009 Lincoln MKZ. Now on a custom fit part I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year, model vehicle and it will show you if this will work for your application. This harness will provide this four way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. It is compatible with five pull, six pull and seven pull adapters that we do sell separately. This will connect very quickly and easily, there's no cutting or splicing of wires.

Basically just locate your connection points in the rear cargo area, plug in your connectors, there's a few on the driver side, one on the passenger side. Ground your white wire, run your power wire to your vehicle's battery and then run your four way out towards the back of the car where the hitch would be. Now it does include this tail light converter, which is a black box to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer. It is a power module, means it connects directly to the back battery and that's to avoid overloading your vehicle's electrical system. The terminals that you plug in, they are protective connection terminals to help resist corrosion. Does come with this nice dust cap for the four way, so what's nice about that is you can just attach it to the four way plug, and once you get it attached you can actually leave it on there if you prefer, but then what's nice is when you're not plugged into your trailer, just put your cap over the terminals and it will protect it from any damage or from the elements.

Comes with everything shown here on the table. A nice set of detailed instructions that describe how to connect everything, and it's pretty simple to connect. Now the maximum amperage on this for the stop and turn light circuits is 4.2 amps per circuit, and for the tail light circuit is 7.5 amps. When you go to install this, what you want to do is start on the driver side, and like we mentioned, you go to the rear cargo area behind the tail lights, and you'll have these connectors right here. It has the yellow wire and then this one has the red wire in it. These will be for the driver's side, so you'll start on the driver's side and unhook your harness to the tali lights and plug these in those places.

The connectors will match up to these, and then you'll take this other connector on this length of green wire, that's for the passenger side, so you'll run this all the way over to the passenger side and then make your connection behind the tail lights with these connectors. Now your converter, you do want to attach to a nice flat surface so it doesn't bounce around. They do include some cable ties that you can anchor it down with so it doesn't move around. Then you have your two wires here. The white wire has an eyelet on you can see, that's for ground, so if there's a nearby ground that you can ground this to, you want to do that.

If there isn't, they do include a grounding screw that you can make your own ground. Then your power wire, the red wire here with the butt connector on it, this needs to run to your vehicle's battery, so they do include this length of wire. You take one end of the wire, connect it to the power wire, run this all the way to the front, and you don't want to connect this directly to the battery, you want to run it through this in line fuse holder. Attach it to one side where the butt connector is of the fuse holder, and then the other side with the eyelet on it will connect to the vehicle's battery. Take your included 20 amp fuse they got here, push it into your fuse holder, put your cap on there and then your systems all pretty much ready to go. As we mentioned, they do include some extra cable ties to take up also any slack in the wiring, and then the nice thing is they include a little packet of terminal grease or dielectric grease. What's nice about that is you want to put a little bit on each connection you make that's an electrical connection, and even put it on the four way when you plug it in to your trailer because that grease will help prevent any corrosion from happening in your electrical connections. That should do it for the review on the Hopkins plug in simple vehicle wiring harness with the four way flat trailer connector,.

  • How Does the Trailer Wiring Harness # HM11140395 Install on a 2010 Mercury Milan Premier
Installation of the trailer wiring harness # HM11140395 is fairly straight forward. The main connections from the harness connect in line with the tail light wiring on the vehicle. The converter will be grounded to a bare metal surface or existing ground location. The only real time-consuming part is routing the power wire to the vehicle battery. If your battery happens to be in the trunk or even under the backseat, this is not very difficult. Most cars and trucks have the battery under...

  • Curt Trailer Hitch # 11329 Vs. Hidden Hitch # 60846 for a 2008 Lincoln MKZ
Both the Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch # 60846 and the Curt Hitch # 11329 are quality hitches and neither have had any quality or fit issues for us. I attached a page that shows both of these products side by side for you to check out. The only noticeable difference in construction between the two hitches is that the Hidden Hitch has a larger welded on bracket for securing the stinger of the hitch to the cross tube. This might give the Hidden Hitch a slight advantage. I attached installation...

  • Can a 2009 Lincoln MKZ Pull a Pop-Up Camper
In order to tow a trailer with a 2009 Lincoln MKZ you'll need a trailer hitch, trailer wiring harness, and ball mount/hitch ball. I will attach a list below with each of these options. In regards to capacity and compatibility, you'll have to refer to your copy of the owner's manual for this which should be located in the glove box. We cannot recommend deviating from the manufactures instructions. Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver part # C11329 Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring Harness That Instantly Blows Fuse When Connecting to Battery
The Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # HM11140395 having a spark as well as blowing a fuse is a sure sign that the ground is not connected properly or the power wire at some point is touching a metal ground. I recommend tracing that power wire to ensure there is no insulation missing where it could be touching metal. You can see with our installation of this wire we used wire loom # 7509-10 in some areas to assist with areas that have sharp...

  • Troubleshooting Brake Lights that are Staying On
I can help you troubleshoot this wiring connection issue. First thing I would do would be to use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 and test the 4-pole at the end of the vehicle to make sure all the functions are properly working. If they aren't, then I would move on to the wiring before the converter box. If this wiring is all running correctly, you may have a bad converter box on your harness. If all the poles are functioning normal, then you may consider checking the wiring on your...
