Installation of Curt Brake Controller Adapter

To install your Curt electric brake controller, you need to connect the wiring of the controller to your vehicle. Certain auto manufacturers offer pre-wired options, typically known as tow packages, wherein wiring is run for you from the dash to the trailer connector on the back of your vehicle. When this is done, a port is installed at your dash so that you can easily plug in a brake controller.

Junction Box on VehicleBrake-Control Adapter Port

This adapter plugs into the port that is built into the electric junction box beneath your vehicle's dash. The black box is located to the left of the steering column, just above the carpet. To plug in the adapter, first remove the cover on the box. The adapter plugs into the second slot from the left, on the top row.

No hardwiring is required to install this adapter. After you plug it into the factory port, you simply plug the other end of the adapter directly into your electric trailer brake controller. Because there are no wires to connect, installation is not permanent. You can unplug and remove your brake controller at any time to transfer it to another vehicle or securely stow it away.

I purchased a Curt brake controller from the Chevy dealership and when it arrived it was a controller and a hand full of wires to splice into my system. I got a hold of etrailers and the staff was pleasant and sold me what I actually wanted from the dealership. Now I know to call these guys for all my trailer wiring needs.

  • Curt Brake Controller Not Working Correctly After Moving It From 2006 Silverado to 2001 Model
If you are using the same wiring adapter in the 2001 as you had in the 2006 Silverado, it would explain the problem you're having. Both model years use the same plug, but after the 2002 model year, GM changed the pinout on the connector under the dash. The 2006 Silverado uses the # C51352 wiring adapter, while the 2001 model would use the # C51342. I've edited a photo for you showing the difference between the two connectors, you can move the red wire to the correct location by removing...

  • Troubleshooting Curt Venturer Trailer Brake Controller on 2002 Chevrolet Silverado
It sounds like the wiring harness under the dash of your 2002 Chevrolet Silverado does not have power running to it. To test this, use a circuit tester like # PTW2993 to check the connector. If this is the problem, you will need a Universal Wiring Kit for Brake Controllers # C51500. The install instructions are attached. You'll also need to modify the factory harness in your truck a bit. On the factory harness cut the battery wire leading to the factory connector leaving enough room...

  • Troubleshooting Curt Brake Controller Installation in 1990 Chevy Silverado
If your brake controller is a time-delay type like the Curt Venturer # C74VV it should activate the trailer brakes either when you press the brake pedal or press the manual override lever. But if you have a proportional type controller like the TriFlex # C24VV, which is triggered by inertia (from the motion of your truck) then the brake pedal will activate it ONLY if you are moving. With both types of controller the manual override lever should activate the brakes to the selected power...

  • Wiring Harness to Plug in a Curt Venturer Brake Controller to a 2002 GMC Yukon XL Denali
We certainly do! For your 2002 GMC Yukon XL Denali you will need wiring harness # C51342 to plug in your Venturer brake controller # C74VV. I have included a link to a video review of the harness for you.

  • No Power to Trailer Connector on 2002 Chevy Suburban with Curt Trailer Brake Controller
On certain model year Chevy and GMC trucks and SUVs there are some connections that need to be made under the hood to make everything fully functional. It happens on vehicles with or without the factory tow package. Basically, it sounds like the power output to the trailer connector from the brake controller is not run. You will need to manually run it from where the wire terminates under the hood to the back of the 7-Way in the 7 oclock position. You can use wire # 10-1-1 sold in increments...

  • Parts Needed to Install Brake Controller in 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500
To install the Curt Echo Under Dash part # C27JR in your 2000 Chevy Silverado 1500 you'd need the install harness part # C51342 which plugs in under the dash. If you were wanting something a little more economically priced you'd want the Brake EVN part # TK63VR with the install harness part # 3025-P which works great and is very reliable.

  • Installing Curt Tri-Flex Brake Controller on 2002 Chevy Silverado 2500
Brake controllers are not vehicle specific, but their wiring adapters are. The # C51342 wiring adapter would be the correct adapter for installing a brake controller into your 2002 Silverado. The adapter would plug into the convenience center under the dash as shown in the help article I linked you to. If your Silverado has the OEM 7-way, all you should need to do is plug the controller into the convenience center and attach the mounting bracket to the underside of the dash. If not, you...

Make sure it is in the same location as the one in the picture. If not, or if any of the wires are in different locations, move them to the correct locations according to the picture.
